Mission Codename Megachonker
“Even if you believe the idea of ‘terroir’ is overused and abused in California, it’s hard to argue that Rockpile has it in spades.” – Wine Spectator
Rugged, mountain-bred Cabernet for over HALF OFF! A complex, brooding beast that can easily go round for round with many of the best from Napa or Bordeaux.
But for $29 it leaves most anything worth drinking from those two regions in the dust…
This Rockpile Cabernet Sauvignon is born from the small AVA up in Dry Creek Valley. The high elevation (1,200 feet plus) and proximity to the Pacific Ocean (just 7 miles away) help make it one of the longest growing seasons for Cab. That extra hang time and the rugged terroir deliver a structured and powerful wine similar to what you’d find on Diamond or Howell Mountain. But our deep deal puts it in a MUCH more affordable spot at $29 compared to those famous mountain AVAs.
It comes to us from the insanely reliable Wilson Artisan Wineries group. Their small portfolio of boutique wineries is hugely popular year after year since their humble beginnings in the early 1990s. With wines scoring big with Wine Spectator and that impeccable track record of literally hundreds of Gold Medals from competitions, they are unrivaled, just like their other acclaimed sister properties: Mazzocco, Matrix, Pezzi King, and Wilson Winery to name a few.
In fact, they have been so popular that the mainstream press can’t seem to catch up with reviewing these anymore before they sell out. The one accolade worth noting is the Double Gold medal with 98 points it earned from the North Coast Wine Challenge by The Press Democrat this year, up there with other noteworthy Cabs from Black Stallion, Stuhlmuller, Adobe Road and Gratus.
Expect toasty vanilla, and black peppercorns with a core of blackberries, and black plums, all laced with minerally graphite. The staggering amount of complexity, structure, and raw power on display here is just top-notch for the price. Drink with abandon, on any weeknight over the coming decade. Say if you like ‘em big, Cab don’t get any chonkier than this.
Under $30 for this?! While it lasts!
