Mission Codename Doin you a Fèvre
DEEP COVER: More Fèvre Grand Cru!
“There really is no better place to get a read on Chablis than Fèvre” says Vinous. Were you able to grab enough of this one when it made a Store appearance briefly? Obviously not, that is a leading question, there is no such thing as enough Grand Cru Chablis in life!
Especially when it’s double the 95 points and still somehow - GULP - under $80?!
Some insider info from earlier this year may help explain this extraordinary opportunity… per Wine Spectator “The owners of Château Latour and Château Lafite Rothschild have made a deal over a Chablis winery… to sell top Chablis producer Domaine William Fèvre to Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite for an undisclosed sum.” Good news, we gabbed every one of the last few boxes that were left in limbo-land when the transaction was finalized recently.
A genre-defining New York Times article once pointed out that “Chablis is home to a pair of producers, Raveneau and Dauvissat, who have long been critics’ favorites. Their wines are old-school icons, but unless you have considerable patience you might struggle to understand what the fuss is about, or even to find them. More consistently appealing are the wines of another long-established estate, William Fèvre. This is perhaps the greatest landowner in Chablis, with vines in all 7 of the appellation’s Grand Cru vineyards.”
Let’s talk prices. Take the 2018 vintage we’re showcasing today for example, and our top Grand Cru Valmur at an “surely you’re joking” $95-per-bottle. Raveneau’s 2018 Valmur has long broken the thousand-a-bottle barrier. And Dauvissat’s 2018 Preuses is “such a great value” in the $300s these days. Such Grand Crus are for when only the best will do and deals this good are unimaginable be it any other whites, or reds, from anywhere else in the world, seriously.
$79 is an INSANE STEAL for this quality. Tucked away in the northwestern corner of the amphitheater, it yields wines that need time. Being a 2018 means it’s jetted past the others to prime drinking. Make that SUBLIME drinking with some air. Wow, just WOW.
NOT A JOKE dear Ops, though it may seem like one.
95 Points – Wine Enthusiast
“Cooling, mossy chalkiness plays on this wine’s nose. The palate then displays juicy roundness in the form of ripe, yellow pear pervading chalky depth. Rich lemon-peel notes create contour and add mouthwatering brightness to this concentrated, understated wine that comes with subdued but distinct power. Drink 2025-2045.”
95 Points – James Suckling
“Sweet apples and pears with some stone and flint on the nose. Full-bodied with tight, focused phenolics that frame the wine nicely and then layers of fruit and lively acidity. Nicely crafted and composed. Drinkable now, but better in 2022.”
