Mission Codename Pair o' Dougs
Appy COBBy Friday-y!
Or something like that. What matters is we have not one, not two, but THREE Cobb cherries with massive (97/98) scores on the App today, for your savvy eyes only, you Appy people.
Per Antonio Galloni’s Vinous these are “among the most distinctive artisan wines being made in California today. Readers will not want to miss them.”
You hear that, “readers?”
The Cobb family were some of the pioneers of the rustic Sonoma Coast with their Coastlands Vineyard and have honed their perfecting of Pinot Noir with the marine influence for decades now. Their son and winemaker, Ross Cobb is a virtuoso, having worked with cult Pinot cognoscenti like Williams Selyem, Flowers, and Hirsch. The guy knows what he’s doing!
Old Firs is a micro-production treat that comes from a few rows off the Cobb Estate vineyard famously known as Coastlands. Per the winery, it’s “named after two massive Douglas firs on the property, from a single block that was one of the original plantings at Coastlands Vineyard dating back to 1989.”
Of the entire lineup, it comes across as one of the more opulent and forward ones. It’s splitting hairs at this quality level, but the inclusion of 40% whole clusters has given the Old Firs a refreshing lift that sees right through the intense core of ultra-fine-grained tannins and bright minerality.
As Vinous points out about ANY Cobb, this is not to be missed by any true lover of Pinot. Do future-you a favor and take a few to drink now and a few to age.
Super allocated while they last - forgive us!
98 Points – Jeb Dunnuck
“Similar to the Diane Cobb: Coastlands Vineyard but a touch more ruby in color, the 2021 Pinot Noir Coastlands Vineyard Old Firs Block is also layered and spicy, with aromas of pine needles, fresh cherries, sweet herbs, and pretty anise. Medium-bodied, it’s long on the palate, with a sanguine feel, mouthwatering brightness, and a clean finish. Give it another few years and drink over the following 15. Drink 2026-2041.”
