Mission Codename Calistoke-ah
Today we’re rolling out the red carpet for a collection of ICONIC Cabernets from the motherland we call Napa Valley.
We quietly assembled 10 epic wines from the peaks of Spring Mountain, up the slopes of Howell, down to Stags Leap, and beyond. The full force of Napa’s lush and verdant winegrowing region is on display, with top producers, huge scores from the pros, and unbelievable pricing. We are SO LOCKED IN!!
You’ll find Opus One, Girard and Robert Craig to name a few - assembled in one place like the Avengers to protect your dwindling cellar supply and warm the hearts of our Cabernet-loving Operatives.
One more Girard, and this time we go all the way north to Calistoga, but remain on the valley floor.
Girard is a stalwart in the Napa wine scene, with 40+ years on the block. They make an assortment of Cabs, each one representing a particular AVA. Classical and elegant in style, with a Bordeaux sensibility on one side but also driven by pure intensity and power that only Napa can provide. And these wines surely overdeliver by a long shot at our prices today.
Winemaker Glenn Hugo cut his teeth at Provenance, before working under Tom Rinaldi at Sedna and Fleury Estate Winery. From there he landed at Girard, and the rest is history. But winemaking is only a small piece here - every aspect of the winery is meticulously managed. From state of the art equipment and technology, unique barrels for each wine’s needs, and an obsession with farming practices, the entire process is managed to such a high degree.
For this one we head all the way North, to Calistoga. Where the days are hot, and the diurnal shifts even bigger. Fruit fomes from Tenma Vineyard, at the foot of Mt. St. Helena. Compared to their mountain wines, this has more ripe fruit up front - blueberry and cassis, ripe plum and black cherry. Still, it brings heaps of complexity, with candied walnuts, baking spice, and a touch of eucalyptus and some graphite minerality.
Like the rest of its Cab brethren, this comes in at $48…a far cry from the $120 winery price and WAY less than you’ll pay anywhere else, ever.
93 Points – Decanter “Winemaker Glenn Hugo sources most of his Cabernet grapes from the Tenma vineyard in the Jericho Canyon area of northeastern Calistoga, where vines are planted atop an ancient fluvial fan. Heady dark fruit, cocoa nibs and cedar spice aromas give way to a juicy, weighty mid-palate marked by black cherry and fleshy plums. Muscular tannins are balanced by good acidity, and whispers of purple florals lift the finish. Drinking window 2022-2030.”
93 Points – James Sucking “Aromas of dark fruit and berries, leather and fresh mint. Full-bodied with fine tannins. Bright acidity pairs nicely with the subtle blue fruit. A hint of almond adds pleasant, nutty complexity. Garden herbs, too. Well layered. Best after 2024.”
92 Points – Jeb Dunnuck *“The 2019 Girard Cabernet Sauvignon Calistoga is impressive, with a Bordeaux-like vibe in its tobacco, lead pencil, savory herbs, and darker fruit-driven aromas and flavors. With ripe, velvety tannins, good mid-palate depth, and medium to full body, it’s going to evolve nicely for 10-12 years. Drink 2023-2035.”
