Mission Codename Rocky Balboa

For those who aren’t fully in love with the Walla Walla Valley already, listen up. We’ve got a sweet little deal on a friendly little fruit bomb for you today that might just make you fall head over heels.

The price? Obviously, part of the attraction, at well over 60% off. For $26 you get a juicy, robust, spice-laden red that would easily be mistaken for a top Rhône red if tasted blind.

We’re sure this will trigger more than a few of those “wow, what a pleasant surprise” and “Damn I should have bought a case” comments in the Facebook group (are you in there yet??) in another month or so…you’ve been warned.

Balboa Winery was founded by Tom Glase after cutting his teeth on the region’s original premier property L’Ecole N. 41 and then continuing his journey to work with Corliss, Ash Hollow, and Beresan. He started with a million connections and much less money than that. With a shoestring budget and big dreams, he continued to build on his outstanding reputation and has become a favorite for connoisseurs and critics alike.

One of Tom’s brilliant ideas was to purchase land and plant in what would become The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater AVA in Milton-Freewater, OR—just across the state line from Walla Walla. This area has blown up in the last few years and is known for its distinct cobblestone-rich gravels that were deposited by the Walla Walla River. Think Côte-Rôtie levels of rocky awesomeness.

Region powerhouses like Cayuse, Slight of Hands, and Bledsoe Family Vineyards (like Drew Bledsoe) have invested in the terroir of this extraordinary region and are pumping out wines 2-3x the retail prices of Balboa. AND on top of the already great value that’s baked in at the winery price, your 63% off opportunity seems like a no-brainer. How could you NOT fall in love?!

This Rhône blend takes a note from Côte-Rôtie with a co-fermentation of Syrah and Viognier, along with a smidge of Roussanne (cause, why not?) With 48% whole cluster, it’s beyond complex and aromatic!

Deep plum, dark cherry, and insane floral notes fill the nose. On the palate, dive into a range of ripe red fruits, fresh tobacco, and, of course, the earthiness and minerality The Rocks District is known for. Layered and alluring, this wine is sure to impress any friends weary of the epic wines coming out of Walla Walla.

But don’t delay! Production is tiny so get to it!
