Mission Codename Next in line
How?! How are the deals just raining down like this?? Maybe it was the recent blood-harvest-super-eclipse moon. Or our devastatingly good looks and charm. Or dumb luck.
Whatever the case, here we have ANOTHER mega-Cabernet offer ripe for the picking.
Born from the great Stags Leap District AVA. With a gang of scores - 93 from Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, and a pair of 92s from Jeb and James. Throw in a $110+ break and you have something that rivals a family meal at In-N-Out Burger for straight-up delirious value.
Heir Apparent is the flagship spinoff from Operative favorite Grand Napa Vineyards. They’ve been making some killer wines from their outpost in Rutherford, sourcing fruit from some of the very best vineyard sites in Oakville, Rutherford, and in this case, Stags Leap.
The 2021 vintage was a picture-perfect one. And it wasn’t hard to make a great wine, as this proves. It boasts a bright and juicy core of deep red and black fruit, terrific acidity, and minerality to please the most die-hard rockhounder. Ripe cassis, red and black raspberry, currants, eucalyptus, pencil lead, and crushed granite all join together in a warm group hug. Loads of bright energy and depth play nicely and despite a 22-month residence in oak, moderated well, letting the fruit and nuances shine bright.
This flagship bottling tops out at $165 from the winery but today while it’s here, you can get it for WAY less. If you’re quick and nimble…
93 Points – The Wine Independent
“Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District features scents of warm cassis, wild blueberries, and mulberries plus touches of garrigue, menthol, and graphite. The medium to full-bodied palate has an approachable frame of grainy tannins and bright acidity supporting the vibrant black fruit flavors, finishing on a minty note.”
92 Points – Jeb Dunnuck
“The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Heir Apparent Stags Leap District showed beautifully, with a pure, elegant, classic Stags Leap style in its cassis and black raspberry fruit as well as floral and mineral-like nuances. I love its overall balance and purity, and it has nicely integrated acidity and outstanding length.”
92 Points – James Suckling
“Aromas of blackberries, currants, stones, and baking spices on the nose. Medium body with fine tannins. Spices and herbs mingle with berries and currants on the mid-palate. Lively and straightforward with a vivid finish with some length. Better after 2025.”
