Mission Codename Ames high
Get them shades on.
For reasons that will soon become clear, these wines are so good, so scarce, and so exclusive, that they must hide behind a closely guarded veil of secrecy.
You rarely, if ever, see these bottles at a discount. And because some wineries are very price-sensitive, their mailing list members would go ballistic seeing a deep deal on it.
Unless…
We go full redaction – CLASSIFIED – über-top-secret black ops mission style.
Revealing the name would put our livelihood at stake. Our industry is built on relationships and not wanting to ruffle feathers, sometimes it’s a necessary precaution to redact some of the information.
HOWEVER… we can drop a little trail of breadcrumbs, and the savviest of you may figure it out. With that preamble over, let’s dive in - it’s a GOOD one.
Recently we took the once-classified Arietta Quartet and declassified it into the open. Today we do the opposite with this offer - because it was perhaps the MOST popular Cab we offered in 2020. A big clue there. Of course, that was the 2014 vintage, and this is the 2019. But they share the same qualities.
Got your detective cap on? Good, let’s keep moving closer to the target.
Big clue. Crafted from an estate vineyard perched atop Mt. Veeder, by none other than Jeff Ames - a true master having worked under Thomas Rivers Brown at Schrader, Maybach, Outpost, and TOR. He also has an outstanding personal project that has adorned these pages before.
Hailing from Mt. Veeder, this has all the inky, concentrated richness you crave. Like many before it, this vintage earned at the very least a compelling 95 points and more great scores too of course. Among the great press are nuggets like “simply outstanding… suave and delicious… well-steeped…” and on!
Oh, and we don’t usually flex on the competition, but here’s a fun fact: Last year a competitor offered the previous vintage at $89, touting it as the “best price in the nation.” Maybe that was true at the time, but in today’s world, we feel confident our $55 today takes the crown across the galaxy. Also, if you look out there, today there are just 3 retailers across the universe with it, all in the $130-150 range!
Next key piece of intel to get your gears turning: out of thousands of wines at PRESS in St Helena, this is one of the few they pour by the glass. This wine truly does it all. It has sweet, ripe fruit. The mountain expression, with rugged structure. It boasts incredible complexity, depth, and superb polish. When we tasted it a few weeks ago, it was by FAR my favorite among a stout group of Cabernets. Loads of black cherries draped in dark chocolate, sweet red currants, and crème de cassis flow freely. Melted black licorice, subtle earthy notes, and toasted Tahitian vanilla round it out. The smooth, polished, and ripe tannins bring a soft and luxurious mouthfeel, and the acidity, while on the lower side, is enough to keep it from stalling out. Just a must-have for anyone who wants a flashy, sexy, big ol’ mouthful of mountain Cabernet goodness.
