Mission Codename Old school
Daylight isn’t the only thing we’re saving today. We have some pure Pinot brilliance lined up for you, at well over 50% OFF.
This sub-$30 Pinot comes from one of our favorite small, family-run Sonoma operations. With tiny production and impeccable quality, these were truly a special treat when we tasted them just a week ago.
For those of you who follow Wine Spies for the trophy hunt, for “wow” deals of the local kind with the joy of discovery, this one is for you…
Pinot Noir by one of our favorite hidden secret Sonoma County families. Anthesis is a label started under D’Argenzio Winery. Those in the know, either tourists or locals, all swear by this urban winery complex complemented by the scrumptious Neapolitan pies rolling out of the wood-burning oven at Cibo Rustica next door. These guys have been rocking the Sonoma wine world for decades. Started by identical twin brothers of Italian American heritage, the whole family is involved now, Old World style, and working to continue the tradition of the family’s artisan legacy.
Founder Ray D’Argenzio’s daughter Breanna married talented young winemaker Sandro Tamburin and Anthesis was born! Yet the breakout moment for Anthesis came when another founding Sonoma figure, a prominent journalist, author, and honorary judge, Dan Berger issued one of his highly selective 100-points scores for the 2017 vintage of THIS Pinot Noir, as he raved that “This is a miraculous red wine in ways that took me by surprise. The aroma is prototypical cool climate and thus leans directly toward Burgundy, but with definitive and delightful California fruit.”
For those who have never heard of Dan, his half-a-CENTURY career began as a wine journalist for the Los Angeles Times in 1976. Napa Valley Features said it best just last year, Dan Berger, “The curmudgeonly dean of American wine writers still keeps readers off-balance.”
Yet today is not about Dan, it’s all about Sandro!
These are minimal intervention wines, fermented with native yeasts and crafted to showcase the purity and terroir-driven flavor without heaps of oak, extraction or manipulation. Beautifully aromatic, and clocking in at a lower alcohol, but this Pinot still brings tons of pure, seamless and bright flavors. A perfect gradient of clean but concentrated red fruit leads with cherry, cranberry, and wild strawberries. A hint of cola with layered notes of forest and herb carries into each pleasure-packed sip, with a gentle kiss of cinnamon and clove spices lingering around. Silky and smooth on the palate, and a bright acidity makes it a perfect companion for food.
Easily worth the $60 price from the winery, and a massive value at our $27.
Very little made, and not much to go around on a quiet Sunday…
