Mission Codename Zin-o-philia
“If you’re a hedonist who loves big, jammy Zins, don’t miss the wines from Wilson.” – Wine Spectator
The 2021 ‘Conte’ Chalk Hill Zinfandel is here, and it’s bringing all the 80s and 90s vibes you didn’t know you needed! From Wilson Winery, the rockstars of the Zin world, this boutique crew has been crushing the wine game since the early 90s, stacking up gold medals like Michael Jordan collected championship rings. These guys are the real deal, with wines that hit multi-platinum status long before the mainstream press can catch up.
But this wine isn’t just hype - it’s a serious contender. Scoring a Double Gold medal with 96 points from the 2024 North Coast Wine Challenge by The Press Democrat this year, up there with other top Zins by Alexander Valley Vineyards, Carol Shelton, Deerfield Ranch, and Florence Vineyard and by taking home a Gold from the 2023 Sonoma County Harvest Fair, the 2021 vintage of ‘Conte’ continues Wilson’s tradition of excellence.
Named after Ron & Dana Ann Conte, who planted this vineyard with the renowned St. Peter’s Church clone (courtesy of Ulises Valdez), this Zinfandel is co-fermented with a touch of Petite Sirah. The result? A balanced and satisfying wine that delivers on every level.
Conte is the cool nickname for the Chalk Hill vineyard, where Zin grapes grow at 1,500 feet—prime altitude for some Top Gun level ripening. The volcanic soil and iron-rich terrain give these grapes an intensity that could make any 80s power ballad jealous. Wild boar and deer may want in on the action, but these grapes are destined for something far greater. The winemaker tells us, “This site produces fruit with insane concentration and flavors—like high altitude meets high flavor.”
On the nose, you’ll get raspberry, white pepper, and spices, layered with oak and earthy notes. The palate bursts with a lively fusion of sour cherry and cranberry, balanced by just the right amount of acidity, finishing with a refreshing, satisfying touch.
Now, about that 15.9% alcohol—don’t let it scare you. This Zin is smoother than a Ferris Bueller joyride. With full-bodied richness and pitch-perfect balance, it struts across your palate like M.C. Hammer—big, bold, but oh so smooth.
So, grab a bottle, pop in your favorite VHS, and get ready for a flavor trip that’s as rad as a 90s mixtape. This Zin is pure magic in a bottle while it lasts!
