Mission Codename Liviolove
“Exquisite white wines that helped put Collio on the global wine map.” – Wine Spectator
This is why they label good old Sauvignon Blanc just ‘Sauvignon’ and get away with it.
Who cares if it’s Blanc, or Vert, Or Gris, or Musque. When it’s as pure as the Alpine snowmelt, it doesn’t matter what you call it.
Double 92 points, and we dare say it deserves a much higher score. This will reshape your perspective on what a Sauvignon Blanc can do. So fresh. So clean. Absolutely one of the “benchmarks for white wines in Italy” as the review notes.
There’s no doubt, this will be one of those “DO YOU HAVE MORE” wines after you taste it. And you know how that goes…
And Colli Orientali del Friuli, within the Friuli Venezia Giulia complex, is heaven on earth for Sauvignon. Per *Antonio Galloni’s Vinous “On the other side of the appellation, elevations rise gently into the hills of the Colli Orientali, spanning from only 350 to up to 1,150 feet, with Ponca soils that mix layers of clay, sandstone and chalky limestone, sometimes so much so that the vineyards themselves appear white… It shouldn’t surprise you that many of the winemakers of the Colli Orientali pride themselves in taking a very Burgundian approach in the vinification process.”
Speaking of Wine Spectator has the history, “The Felluga family has worked in Italian wine since the 1800s. They settled in Friuli’s Collio region after World War II… Both Marco and Livio saw great potential for quality wine from their region, particularly in its white wines. With other like-minded producers, they helped to establish the Collio DOC in 1968. Considered an innovator, Marco chose in his early days to lower yields, retrain vines, and employ other techniques that were not the norm in the area. But his vision to create white wines capable of aging is what resonates most strongly today.”
This 2021 is such a BABY! With the intensity, striking minerality, and endless layers, this ain’t your Napa or Kiwi Sauvignon Blanc. Rather a statement forth for the best of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé of the Loire to take heed. Imagine a crab salad with avocado, citrus, a mustard vinaigrette, and this… will knock your white-wine-loving socks off. At the Friday panel, this was on when we jumped on the last of this vintage, there were many, many other mighty whites and lavish reds, yet this bottle was the first to empty.
Big-name white deals like this don’t come around often. Your turn to clean us out!
92 Points – Wine Enthusiast “This classic Sauvignon Blanc from Friuli has aromas of fresh pear and apples mixed with lemon and mandarin orange. Notes of yellow and white flowers along with stone and fresh herbs waft out of the glass with a little more time. The palate is layered between vibrant citrus notes and fresh herbal notes finishing with a beautiful structure and clean crisp acidity.”
92 Points – James Suckling “Livio Felluga is one of the benchmarks for white wines in Italy. The 160-hectare winery in northeastern Italy is producing what James calls ‘world-class wines coming out of Fruili’s top white appellation, Colli Orientali.’ Reductive and flinty nose with lime citrus, green apples, and guava. Fresh and elegant on the palate with a light to medium body and a pithy finish.”
