Mission Codename The coast with the most
Oh mamma, MAREMMA! Operatives. How we wish we could bring you all together to taste this. Or maybe it’s a good thing cause we surely wouldn’t have enough to spare once the buying frenzy began.
But for those of you who put your faith in our picks - your Super Tuscan fantasies are coming true today.
A polished, sultry, 93-point Right Bank Bordeaux blend from the balmy Tuscan coast for how much??
The $45 winery price is quite tempting. But at just $25?! We urge you to put 4 in your cart at once! Or 6. Do not fall victim to the “I should have got more” trap - take heed and listen to your Agents of Wine…
Val delle Rose came to prominence when the legendary Cecchi family arrived in the area with a mission to transform the region. After a soil test confirmed their suspicion that the region had the perfect terroir composition, they went all in, planting a massively contiguous 250 acres of premium vineyard land. They describe the transformation as a ‘farming revolution’ where the batch-to-batch consistency rose to new heights, as did the winemaking prowess and vision.
A most recent Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate article notes “I am pleased to recognize Maremma Toscana as a region that pushes the boundaries and has a good population of young vintners who seek to make the wines they really want to make. That freedom comes thanks to lower land prices and the lack of an institutional winery hierarchy that you might find in Chianti Classico or Brunello di Montalcino. In fact, it’s no surprise that many estates from those benchmark regions have second brands based here in Maremma Toscana.”
This is made of 95% Merlot and 5% Cab Franc, just like a Pomerol that would cost many times more but still taste less intense. Tasted blind you might come to think it’s a New World Cab or Merlot - it shows so much forward, fruit-driven personality. Dig deeper and you’ll find the traces of wind-swept underbrush, minerality, and floral elements that make it distinctively Tuscan.
Still, compared to other high-end Merlot-based Tuscans it’s much more open and ready to drink NOW. It offers a big, friendly style with a soft, creamy texture. It opens with a lush and heady swath of sweet red and black berries. Toss in some dark chocolate-coated cherries, a dollop of vanilla cream, and droplets of warm exotic woods, violets, underbrush… and you get this! Simply fantastic at this price, and a wine you can drink with abandon and with just about anything, all the time!
Over 40% OFF and with 93 points?! For those who secure some, congratulations. You made a good decision today.
93 Points – James Suckling “This is showing aromas of rose petals, currants, blackberries and spices, such as cloves, as well as mint chocolate. It’s creamy and full-bodied with well-integrated, fine-grained tannins and deliciously ripe and sweet berries. Excellent length. Drink or hold.”
