Mission Codename Pegasus
“The essence of the dramatic and wild Palisades bordering Tenma is deliciously represented in this bold yet classically styled wine.” – Robb Report
Huzzah! We’ve done it yet again!
A flagship single vineyard mountain Cabernet, from the picture-perfect 2021 vintage. Straight from the winery, priced at $150, now over $100 OFF and into your hands for a cool $49. Mind. Blown.
Clos Pegase is one of the flagship wineries in the Vintage Wine Estates portfolio. Perched just behind Sterling Vineyards in Calistoga, they’ve been making ultra-premium Cabernet under the winemaking vision of Robin Akhurst. His experience at Domaine Leflaive and in Australia’s Barossa Valley with Two Hands Winery set the foundation for his career. After returning to Napa he leveled up at Outpost Winery, where he helped Thomas Rivers Brown create iconic wines for Maybach, Schrader, and Rivers Marie. Next, he went to Envy wines, a custom crush operation run by Nils Venge and Mike Carter, where he worked alongside the one and only Mike Smith as the assistant winemaker for Carter wines.
All that experience certainly shows in this wine, which has the hallmarks of any number of iconic, culty, triple-digit Napa Cabs.
This is a MASSIVE crowd pleaser, for sure. Rich like Buffet. Soft like chinchilla fur. Round like Albert. It’s just about perfect from every angle in a single word, LUSCIOUS. Terrifyingly easy to drink at this young age, but based on CellarTracker reviews we have no doubt this will carry on for 10-20 years, if not more.
Robb Report elaborates that “Clos Pegase has four estate vineyards in the Napa Valley, which they have farmed for decades, giving them an intimate understanding of the potential of the land, the unique quality characteristics of grapes that grow there and the potential for greatness of the wines crafted from these singular sources… The Tenma Vineyard is in Jericho Canyon in northeastern Calistoga in the foothills of Mount St. Helena. Its rocky, well-drained terrain with sparse topsoil yields a tiny crop of exquisitely concentrated Cabernet fruit, which is a thrill to work with for a winemaker.”
Fabulously rich and extracted, but not thick or syrupy. It shows off plenty of inky blackberry, plum jam, and black currant on the fruit side, with a linear gradient transitioning into magnificent melted dark chocolate, torrefaction, and candied walnuts. Sweet, soft, polished tannins bring a peach fuzz softness to the texture. Just an incredible, pound-the-table-good Cab that will empty in the blink of an eye.
And at this never-before-seen price, what little we managed to secure will go in the blink of an eye, too. No second chances on this one!
92 Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
“The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Hommage Tenma Vineyard showcases notes of cedar and cherries with cassis undertones and a sprinkling of dried spices. Medium to full-bodied… harmonious, balanced, and even elegant. Drink 2023-2035.”
