Mission Codename in memoriam
App users, we have a treat today! One year ago today, the Wine Industry lost a great legend of the wine world. A man who paved the way for American rockstar winemakers on the world stage. We’re offering this wine in memoriam to him!
Library selection, 11-year-young, Grgich Hills Estate Cabernet!! Plucked straight from the winery cellar and into your lap at an unbeatable price! You can’t even get this on the winery website, where it’s sold out. But if you could, even a wine club member would pay a princely sum…
93 points from James Suckling, and 92 from Tasting Panel.
A recent cellartracker reviews offer a glimpse into its current status and echoes our experience:
“In the middle of its drinking window…another solid American Cab besides Dominus and Spottswood which in my view shows the potential. Absolutely eye-opening and made me curious - the price/performance is great!”
Of course, you probably know Grgich is a pillar of Napa wine history.
Have you seen Bottle Shock THE movie about the historic 1976 Judgement of Paris? If you have, you know the winner of the white wines was crafted by none other than Miljenko Grgich (Mike to his friends) when he was at the helm of Chateau Montelena. If you have not, as a wine-lover you OWE it to yourself and the founding fathers of the California fine wine scene to see it AND pair the experience with another bottle of historic origins. We guarantee a much, much better viewing experience, and the wine will taste even better too!
The depth of Grgich Hill’s place in history is undeniable. So much so that the bottle that Mike Grgich (it’s cool, we were tight) crafted was added to the list of 101 Objects That Made America by The Smithsonian Institute right next to the first barbie and Plymouth Rock. We bring this wine you to you today as a
The wine itself is like a textbook entry for premium Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, 4% Cabernet Franc adds up to 100% deliciousness. At 10+ years it’s still holding a nice core of primary fruit - plum, just-ripe blueberry, and cassis. Delicate violets, a bit of dusty earth, and worn leather frame the secondary nuances, and a deft use of oak rounds out the complexity. Fully resolved tannins are soft, pliable and delicate but holding the frame together nicely.
There is not much else to say about such a legend at this price except, don’t wait. They just don’t make them like this anymore and when they do, you can’t afford it.
Very little of this one, so move quick!
