Mission Codename Cobb-a-rama 2
It’s an Appy Friday Cobb Takeover!
Today we share with you Appy people, our measly allocations of FOUR hot new Pinots and Chardonnays from Master Cobb. Are they all in the 95+ score world you ask? Have you ever seen a Cobb that’s not?!
These wines are not exactly deals or steals in the spy-o-sphere, but they are all about ACCESS and that we have. Privileged to share what we think are some of the hardest-to-get local gems.
Per Antonio Galloni’s Vinous they are consistently “among the most distinctive artisan wines being made in California today, readers will not want to miss them.” You hear that, readers?
The Cobb family were some of the pioneers of the rustic Sonoma Coast with their Coastlands Vineyard and have honed their perfecting of Pinot Noir with the marine influence for decades now. Their son and winemaker, Ross Cobb is a virtuoso, having worked with cult Pinot cognoscenti like Williams Selyem, Flowers, and Hirsch. The guy knows what he’s doing!
Back to Vinous for some pertinent praise: “Ross Cobb’s 2021 Pinot Noirs are the best wines he has ever made. From top to bottom, this is an absolutely stellar range. As always, Cobb crafts Pinots that exalt freshness and verve.” This Pinot may not be inexpensive exactly, even at our best anywhere price. Rice-Spivak, a tiny vineyard shared by only a few other boutique labels - Banshee, Claypool, LaRue, and Reeve - is on its 18th consecutive vintage for Ross’ lineup, he basically put the site on the map.
Super allocated - only 10 cases of each - so forgive us for sellouts!
96 Points – Antonio Galloni’s Vinous “Ross Cobb’s 2021 Pinot Noirs are the best wines he has ever made. From top to bottom, this is an absolutely stellar range. As always, Cobb crafts Pinots that exalt freshness and verve. The wines are done with a high percentage of stems, typically 40-50% for most of the wines. One of the most distinguishing stylistic choices here is a preference for longer time in barrel relative to most producers. The 2021 Pinot Noir Rice-Spivak Vineyard is fabulous. Dark and mysterious in the glass, the 2021 offers up an exotic mélange of dark cherry, spice, new leather, licorice, graphite and dried herbs. Vivid and explosive, but also light on its feet. The 50% stems are beautifully integrated. What a classy, gorgeous wine. Ross Cobb has worked with this fruit since 2003. Drink 2024-2033.”
