Mission Codename Robin's Place
“A sympathetically crafted, evocative expression of this place that is a must-try…” – Wine Advocate
After three decades in the business as a buyer, I thought I had seen the most glorious wine estates around the world. I was wrong. Visiting Pym-Rae was a highlight like no other. Today the site is owned by the famed Pontet-Canet, but the famed Bordeaux producer is just the tip of this property’s otherwise incredibly rich history.
The place is so spellbinding that Superman, aka. Christopher Reeve, as a guest of previous owner Robin Williams, spent a good part of his aging years there. He ended up gifting a Daily Planet globe to the estate and it still hangs high in the foyer, accentuating the otherworldly feel of being there.
A comparatively young estate for Napa, but the owners bring a world of experience. And it shows. They’ve achieved near perfection every year, starting with their first vintage in 2016. They easily compete with the best in the world, and this 2019 vintage is simply magical.
100 Points – The Wine Independent “From Alfred Tesseron’s (owner of Pontet Canet in Pauillac) estate on Mount Veeder, the 2019 Pym Rae is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 20% Cabernet Franc. Deep purple-black colored, it requires a fair bit of swirling before it charges out of the gate with bold notes of crème de cassis, black cherry compote, and blueberry pie, followed by suggestions of clove oil, lilacs, licorice, and tar, plus a spicy waft of cumin seed. The full-bodied palate delivers beguiling energy from the brightness of fruit, bursting with fragrant floral notes, minerally sparks, and exotic spices. It has a taut backbone of invigorating acidity, matched by firm, ripe, grainy tannins, supporting the epic long, multi-layered finish. This 2019 is the vinous definition of opulence. This is the first vintage certified organic and biodynamic. Drink 2026-2066.”
