Mission Codename PaSo so good
“…lovely site…“ – Maz Naba, Wine Enthusiast 40 Under 40 Tastemaker
There are LOTS of reasons to love Paso Robles. The beautiful sunshine, rolling hills, proximity to landmarks like Hearst Castle and the beaches. And of course, the big, plush, mouthfilling reds that linger on your palate for days after the last drop.
But our FAVORITE part of Paso?!
The epic values!
Under $20 for a big, bad Petite?! A no-brainer deal you SHOULD NOT pass up. We were flabbergasted with the samples and kept asking WHO are these people? Turns out no one but really, REALLY great fruit. At bare minimum, throw a bottle in your Locker. Or just snag a case to keep around for your weeknight cellar defender stockpile. Your new house wine?! Your new favorite rotation to open in any situation!
Parvaneh was a tiny winery from the Eastside of Paso Robles that dabbles in fine olive oil as well as big bold reds. Buuuut like many tiny wineries, they sadly are no more. It’s near impossible to find anything about them, so truth be told, we won’t regale you with any flowery family winemaking story. There’s no rockstar winemaker. Limited press, if any, even limited anything online but this…
Maz Naba, a Wine Enthusiast “40 Under 40 Tastemaker” says “As I was looking to expand my fruit sources I came upon this lovely site which is owned by Homan Hadawi. It appealed to me right away when I learned of the biodynamic agricultural approach, its diverse and nitrogen-rich top-soils - and the romantic in me loved that he named the vineyard after his mother who’s nickname was Butterfly (Parvenah translates to butterfly in Farsi). Situated roughly 20 miles as the crow flies from Big Rock in Morro Bay, the natural terroir of Parvaneh Vineyards consists of soils derived from solid bedrock, weathered granite, and marine sedimentary rock of the Miocene-age Monterey Formation, featuring calcareous shales, sandstone, diatomaceous, and volcanic earth dating back several millennia.”
It’s just you, me, and this deep, powerful, Petite Sirah. Front loaded with red and black plum, ripe cherry and dark espresso notes. Even with a little age it shows plenty of youth with just the slightest secondary notes of wood, cigar box, and tobacco leaf turning up at the edges. It’s all framed with big velvety tannins dancing around a solid acidic structure and layers of spice, earliness and lovely big fruit.
You WANT this AND some of their 2016 Reserve we were also able to snag the last of, both are DELISH!
Oh, and don’t let that score dissuade you, with a few years in the bottle this to our palates is about 2-3 points ahead of that youthful estimate, TRUST US on that, thank us later.
89 Points – Wine Enthusiast “Dried blackberry, roasted beef, smoke and a whiff of vanilla show on the nose of this bottling. The palate shows slightly sour tones of black currant and blueberry with hints of baking spice that cut through the dense texture.”
