Mission Codename Super Paso
Super Tuscan lovers! You could go big and be spending $200-$300 on Sassicaia, Solaia, Masseto…
Or… hear us out.
Get THIS 93 point Paso-powered, Super Tuscan-styled red for a fraction of that. Looking for an alternative to the ink blotch Napa Cabs (that we all love dearly)? Something with a little more fresh red fruit, a food-friendly acidity, and vibrant brightness? But without sacrificing ripe fruit? This is it.
Made by the Hearst Ranch winemaker, at over HALF off this simply CRUSHES the category for $25. These are the kinds of clandestine deals you’ll only uncover at Wine Spies.
Soren Christensen has been making wine at Hearst Ranch, Alta Colina, L’Aventure and his own cult-y brand Clos Solene.
Then he pursued a ‘passion project’ of sorts - and this was the result.
Established in 2011 as a passionate project by celebrated Winemaker Soren Christensen. ‘Anonimo’ began as a desire to create a Californian take on Tuscan blends that show the versatility of Grapes from the Paso Robles growing area. Jim and Debi Saunders (7th generation Central Coast and native Paso Roblan) have long been fans of the wines Soren creates and now incorporate the grapes they grow at their estate in Paso for over 30 years. Working with Soren they were excited to acquire the Anonimo from him in 2020 when the opportunity arose. Soren remains the winemaker, working closely with Jim and Debi.
This is truly a new, refreshing twist on wines from Paso. Produced in very small lots which means there is only so much to go around. We were last able to feature this winery over a year ago and have been asking for more ever since. Today’s wine is the current release with a killer score from Mr. Suckling and surely will age beautifully!
It’s powerful but not heavy and could easily compete for intensity and complexity with the aforementioned big guns of Tuscany. Sangiovese dominates the blend, with equal parts Petite Verdot and Petite Sirah to round things out. This is loaded with dark red and black berries, minerality, spices, and roasted herbs. Dusty, fine-grained, grippy tannins and ample acidity carry it along and make for a perfect pairing. Grab a nice NY strip steak and enjoy!
Simply an incredible value! Not much of this little discovery though…
93 Points—James Suckling “Opulent bright red in appearance, the nose gives lifted aromas of wild raspberries, cherries and pencil shavings. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and vibrant acidity, showing notes of cranberries, cocoa and herbs de Provence. Made from a blend of 60% sangiovese, 20% petite sirah and 20% petit verdot that is very well integrated and balanced. Drink or hold.”
