Mission Codename If Donna Karan were wine
Fresh drops of gold from the man, the myth, the LEGEND: Dan Kosta!
You could plop down $100 for Kosta Browne at the local bodega. You could drop $50-70 for many similarly styled out Chards, too.
Or, hear me out - get this for $36. Then, DoorDash your favorite dinner, kick back, and revel in your brilliant life choices.
Did we forget the 94 big ones from Decanter AND the Enthusiast?!
“Welcome Back, Kosta” wrote Wine Spectator last year, announcing this exciting launch: “Vintner Dan Kosta is back, albeit he never really left. A founder of California Pinot Noir powerhouse Kosta Browne, Dan has launched a new Sonoma Chardonnay and Pinot Noir project called Convene. The name translates on different levels - it refers to Kosta being back in the wine game and to working with his winemaker of choice, Shane Finely.”
If you had the Pinot we sold, you know the quality threshold is sky high here. No corners cut. No second-tier downgrades to the “secret sauce” that has always made Kosta’s wines so crave-worthy. And we’re still fangirling about the price in front of our eyes…
He’s not alone on the venture, either. Shane Finley is the ‘secret weapon’, bringing his own magic touch from his years at Copain, Paul Hobbs, Kosta Browne, Lynmar Estate, Banshee… to name a few.
This man is a serial hitmaker, that’s for sure. And this is the golden nectar that makes Chardonnay so fascinating and versatile. Style it however you want - big, buttery and rich or crisp, zippy and bright. Or somehow, pack ALL that in there and more. This covers the gambit - creamy and toasty, all that fresh churned butter, ripe pears and pineapple, and the ever-important acidity and brightness to keep it from stalling out as it glides from front to back with a pig pile of flavors sending your neurons into overdrive.
Very limited. So, if you’re among the lucky ones reading this, it’s your time to shine…
94 Points – Decanter “Dan Kosta and Shane Finely have worked together since 2006, when Finley, at age 26, began working in the cellar at Kosta Browne. These guys are having a lot of fun with Convene, the label Kosta launched in 2019. After their entry-level bottlings, the Convene label represents the ‘Premier Cru’ level wines, while DK Grail is the ‘Grand Cru’ tier. They are unquestionably ‘Holy Grail’ worthy. Finley and Kosta are big fans of longer ageing and extended lees contact with their Chardonnays. We tasted in February 2024, and they’d just bottled their 2022s. Super expressive nose with wonderful ripe fruit flavours alongside butterscotch and toasty brioche. Wonderfully rich and full-bodied with plenty of salty mineral tension. Partial malolactic fermentation means the wine retains great tension, vibrancy, and freshness. Flavours run the spectrum from Meyer Lemon to apricots and white peaches. Crushed Marcona almonds are entangled in the finish, and I find this a balanced expression of California Chardonnay with the right amount of toasty richness and acidity. Drink 2024-2038”
94 Points – Wine Enthusiast “Mellow, intricately blended spices, butter, toast and generous fruit flavors give this wine a pleasing, rich expression without losing its balance. A medium to full body and supple texture support deep poached-pear and peach flavors for impressive concentration and length.”
