There’s not a whole lot of Tempranillo planted, around here. Marimar is one of the few doing justice to this Spanish transplant. And in Sonoma County wine country, no less! We have been lucky enough to feature many beautiful wines over the years but we’ve never been smart enough to wrangle a Tempranillo from Marimar.

When Marimar Torres planted her vineyard in Sonoma County in the 1980s, she knew she had to pay homage to her Spanish roots and plant native varietals like Albarino, Godello and Tempranillo. Hailing from Northern Spain, Tempranillo enjoys sunny days and increases in complexity as the growing season is drawn out. Marimar’s property’s proximity to the coast allows for retention of acid and lush intensity.

93 points from Mr. Suckling himself, this Tempranillo has everything you want in a red wine. It is elegant, layered and truly robust.

Tempranillo is known for its ageability. With the structure and intensity of the wine now, it will easily age for another 10 years plus. Meaning, it is a “case me” wine so you can watch the evolution throughout the years.

As Wine Spectator raves in an article titled, “Catalonia to California: Marimar Torres cultivates her own wine legacy in Sonoma.” This small winery is led by a true renaissance lady - born in Spain as an heiress to the Torres wine legacy, she speaks six languages, has degrees in enology, and leads the charge in making some truly fantastic wines for her eponymous estate.

Marimar’s daughter Christina Torres has taken over as GM recently after working around the world for some of the best wine brands. She continues Marimar’s legacy and is shepherding the brand into the next generation.

The strength of these women pair nicely with the deep talent and knowledge of winemaker Bill Dyer, an OG who came to Napa in 1976. He worked with Ric Forman early on, developed Sterling Vineyard’s single-vineyard program, and helped with Sodaro Estate, and Frog’s Leap Winery, among others. Today he makes his own wine and continues consulting closely with Marimar Torres on their vinous adventures. Like bringing the Atlantic’s most popular grape to the Pacific and NAILING it stylistically with a huge YUM factor.

This wine is juicy and elegant. Think dark cherries, dried figs and floral notes on the nose. The palate is plush with tannins and balances savory undertones with ripe berries and jam. Beautifully structured, this will flourish in the bottle over the next decade or two.
