Mission Codename La beauté
“Not your father’s Chorey-lès-Beaune.” – Wine Spectator
You have no idea how long it’s been since I dreamed of a Tollot-Beaut showing up on Wine Spies.
Per Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate their wines are “extremely well made and just brimming over with delicious, sensual, bright blue and red fruit”. And we have the ultimate example of that, right here, for a price that seems long forgotten amongst most Burgundies these days.
THIS. What crunchy, juicy red cherries smothered in rich chocolate after being dipped in kirsch feels like if they came liquified.
Lovers of American Pinot, fear not, however. As Wine Spectator put it, this shows a richly fruited profile for a red Burgundy, with New World levels of drinkability. I’m already planning to fire up the Ooni and drop a Napoli style pizza or three in there to enjoy alongside it.
Oh, and if you’re the collector type and have time to wait, the granddaddy of this is in the Store here for the day, though only a few bottles were imported, fair warning if you MUST have some Corton too from just up the hill where this extreme value is grown, by the way.
Neal Martin of Antonio Galloni’s Vinous is a big fan, and his impressions are spot on: “Nathalie Tollot welcomed me to her Chorey-lès-Beaune winery, one I have been visiting for two decades now. “These are delicious wines that, I can vouch from much personal experience, mature with grace. This was one of the best ranges I have tasted from Tollot-Beaut; their 2022s are imbued with perhaps just a tad more finesse and terroir expression than recent vintages.”
These glowing barrel impressions are harbingers of the tremendous complexity in the bottle now: Per Antonio Galloni’s Vinous, it’s “Very smooth on the entry, with fine tannins and pastille-like purity, with a dash of white pepper on the chocolate-tinged finish. Easy-drinking Chorey-lès-Beaune.” Per Burghound – “The succulent, caressing and seductively textured flavors possess volume. A lush Chorey that could easily be enjoyed young if desired.” Per Inside Burgundy it’s got “Extravagant fruit” and “will absolutely do what a Tollot-Beaut Chorey should do.”
Our tasting note stresses all that AND how YUMMY it is out of the bottle today.
But we must add one detail, not much remains.
With tariffs still looming, the price on Burgundy seems likely to continue increasing to ever-unapproachable heights…lock this in while it’s under $50.
90 Points – Wine Spectator “Verging on exotic and pushing the ripeness this red exhibits cherry, boysenberry, pomegranate, hibiscus and toasty oak. Lively, with a touch of heat and light tannins on the finish. Not your father’s Chorey-lès-Beaune. 425 cases imported. Drink now through 2029.”
