Mission Codename Huffer to Van
Over half off a small, ultra-boutique, estate-produced Cabernet from a most excellent vintage?
What’s the catch? There’s gotta be one, right?
Yes, there is.
The simple answer is they changed labels, rebranded, and now you reap the benefits by scoring an already generously priced Cab for an unbelievable $25. That’s the same price territory as your mid-tier shelf at Target - but this ain’t no mid Cab.
Alexander Valley is home to some of the greats - Jordan, Silver Oak, and Lancaster Estate to names few big dogs. They all turn loose some incredible Cabs from the region, but good luck finding even a half-bottle at this price. Way under $30!!
What began as more of a winemaking hobby/collective among friends, then named Heffernan (which you might recall from a few months ago), has evolved into a more polished, professional operation that today is called Vannucci. They meticulously farm their modest three acres with love and care and obsession. And it shows, especially in a wonderful, near–perfect vintage like 2019.
This Cab is incredibly friendly and easy to drink. Too easy. Sweetly fruited, bright and full of rich black currant, Amarena cherries, blackberry and toasty oak. A whisper of spiced walnut, dusting of vanilla, and smooth, soft tannins fill it out and carry it gently into the good night. At this price? If you aren’t snagging a bottle or twelve we’ll need to have a one to one discussion….
As with many finds like this, just under 600 cases were made. And what’s left is here before your eyes, until it’s not…
