Mission Codename Daaaaaaaamn
Wait…you’re telling me Chris Pratt makes a wine??
Yes. But not the guy who plays Thor. Although, this sure does bring all the weight, power and dense concentration of Thor’s Mjolnir.
And at our price it simply CRUSHES everything in its path. Under $40 for a Lewelling Vineyard Cabernet?! “I said Goddamn:” is right!
We’re shook. THE Lewelling Vineyard?! My hands are sweaty just typing this…
Lewelling, if you know, is just about one of the best sites in all of Napa you can get fruit from. The eponymous Lewelling vineyard Cabs are much coveted and only available via mailing list. And as you might expect, they come with a price that’s way, WAY higher than this.
“I said Goddamn!” is an obvious reference to that famous scene in Pulp Fiction with Uma Thurman, and it’s a perfect name for this badass discovery. In a competitive lineup it stood tall, head and shoulders above everything and caused a ruckus as we battled for who took the bottle home. In the end, we just drank it, which was the fair thing to do.
The famed Lewelling vineyards were established in 1864 near the western foothills in St. Helena by pioneer horticulturalist and winegrower John Lewelling. It’s extremely rare to see a vineyard designate from them, and when you learn about this label it’s clear this is truly rarer than hen’s teeth.
So, if not the actor, who is Chris Pratt? He’s certainly no stranger to making great wines - having spent time at Napa Wine Co, Orin Swift, ADAMVS, Staglin and currently Aonair.
The wines he makes for his own label are all one offs - there’s no continuous string of vintages from the same source. If he finds some good grapes he sees fit to use, he puts them to good use.
As the Napa Wine Project said, “there are boutique producers, and then there are micro producers”. The ones who make 100-150 cases a year or so. Basically, enough to satisfy their personal quest for wine. And like Charlie’s golden ticket, your chances of finding any of this in the wild is slim to none…until today.
This stuff delivers heaps of deep, polished red fruit. Loads of creme de cassis, mulberry jam, and Amareno cherries on the palate. Toasted oak spices, sweet Virginia tobacco, and really well-balanced acidity help keep it moving. Youthful tannins show signs of softening but with a few more years I’m sure they’ll turn buttery soft. Overall, the style is pretty typical for a high-end Napa Cab, although not super extracted and “sweet” or inky, a restraint which we appreciate.
So…you’re facing a pretty easy decision, right? This is truly a unicorn offer. We can’t say it will be the last Lewelling he ever makes, but odds are we won’t see this wine again. Ever. No second pours. No second chances here…you know the drill. Move quick!
But we’ll leave you with a little secret - if you do miss this one, we have a second Cab from him lined up and ready to roll when this sells out. It’s not from Lewelling but it also massively overdelivers…stay tuned.
