Mission Codename Timelessness
I’ll gladly write the Yquem, said Agent Noir, I just visited for the first time!
Dreams do come true, dear Ops, after 3 decades in the business, our trusted buyer finally made it to a Château so mythical its reputation precedes all.
It was everything he dreamt of, and more. Like we keep hearing about AI-enhanced 3D geographic laser displays that explain the terroir in colorful animated layers that are projected onto topographical round maps molded from the actual vineyard dirt that you stand over and watch. Come again, Noir? What did they pour you there? His brain might not have survived the intensity of the botrytis we fear.
This, by the way, is the third Yquem we ever sourced here, the first one being the 5 cases of 2019 that came and went fast a couple of years ago, and similarly, a handful of halves of 2022 that we still keep getting asked if we can source more. Usually, with Yquem, what you see is what you get, you snooze… You get the drift.
But 2007… at the BEST PRICE anywhere?! Behold the glory.
The greatest nobly rotten wine on the planet is STUFF THAT LEAVES YOU SPEECHLESS with age.
There are a lot of wines out there that are not worth that much a bottle, but command those prices because of scarcity, hype, fame. But this, is NOT one of them. It’s Château d’Yquem, the undisputed Queen of Sauternes.
Besides inducing a bucketful of drool just by looking at it, what’s inside is PURE NOBLE ROT, folks. The ultimate symbol of luxury, and one of the most luxurious elixirs you can imbibe or ingest.
Please be considerate and don’t grab more than a couple. Trouble is, there just isn’t enough for everyone, neither made nor available today. Apologies for any undue stress when we run out, probably before you can read through the raving reviews below. Mind you, while no 100 points yet, in all great Sauternes vintages like 2007, Yquem takes its sweet time to get there, so invest before it’s too late.
Oh, be sure to check these 10 Things You Should Know About Château d’Yquem out too, some fascinating history there!
Very limited.
98+ Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate “Pale to medium gold colored, the 2007 d’Yquem delivers powerful scents of tropical fruits - dried mangoes and pineapple paste - accented by acacia honey, toasted almonds and woodsmoke with hints of chalk dust, kettle corn and lime blossom. The palate reveals one of those vintages that shape-shifts into an apparently drier style than it is, largely thanks to its uber-racy backbone of freshness and layered mineral-inspired flavors, finishing with a regal, satin-textured savoriness. Difficult to resist now, this will be one of those Rip Van Winkle vintages that can be predicted to cellar not just for decades but for generations. For number crunchers: 14.2% alcohol, 137 grams per liter residual sugar, and total acidity is 3.7 grams per liter. Drink 2019-2080.”
98 Points – The Wine Independent “A blend of 80% Semillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc, with 137 grams per liter of residual sugar, the 2007 Yquem has a pale to medium gold color. It slips sensuously from the glass with open-knit scents of apricot preserves, persimmon butter, and Golden Delicious apples, followed by hints of baking bread, aniseed, and wood smoke. The palate is concentrated, with alluring stone fruit and spiced apple layers, supported by just enough freshness, finishing long and opulently spicy. Drink 2023-2057.”
98 Points – Decanter “Befitting a glorious Sauternes vintage, the 2007 Yquem stood out in this tasting like a beacon. Sandrine Garbay notes that it was ‘a great year for noble rot and feels that, like 2001, 2007 is a “classic” expression of Yquem.’ Burnished hue in the glass, remarkably powerful and concentrated with endless layers of flavour. Aged in oak for 2.5 years, remarkably this could still benefit from further ageing and integration of oak. Despite the power and weight, the wine remains fresh and vibrant with driving acidity. Should improve for a decade and drink well for 30-40 years. Residual Sugar: 137g/L. Drink 2022-2055.”
