Mission Codename To Kalon or Not To Kalon...
“…all done in a forward, sumptuous style that is hugely appealing.” – Vinous
You found it!
Zeitgeist’s library single vineyard Oakville Cab!!! 95 points from Dunnuck, and a flat out STUNNER!
Get your collector’s hat on, people - we’ve got a true triple-threat cellar selection coming right for you! When we’re diligently scouring the upper tiers of the market for you, we like to set our sights on bottles with pedigree. History of great reviews, incredible vineyard source, star-power winemaker… And this is about as safe a bet as taking the Philadelphia Eagles over your local 3A high school squad. Especially when you knock a huge chunk off the price tag, which is (insanely) what we’ve decided to do!
The critics historically LOVE this flagship Napa red. Jeb Dunnuck gave the 2021 release a near perfect 99/100 and called it “just about pure perfection and is a match for anything in the vintage.” This one clocked a 95 when it was first scored. Jeb called it “flawlessly balanced” and put the drinking window at 2024-2045. Judging by our estimates it’s crazy youthful still, and it’s only improved since he scored it.
And it’s not just ANY Oakville Cab, but from a vineyard right in the heart of the To Kalon cluster. Just a couple of vineyards are grandfathered to use To Kalon in their name, as in Beckstoffer and Mondavi. But here’s a little fact: Oakville Station Vineyard was historically a part of To Kalon.
It all comes together with this one. Aromas of black cherry, blackberry jam, cedar planks heating up on the grill, and the finest leather. Soft, round, and expansive on the palate, it delivers loads of blackberry pie, toasty sweet oak, and sweet violets. The mouthfeel is as smooth as liqueur, as fresh as a morning breeze, as fruity as plum pie, and with sweet, resolved tannins and a finish as long as the Alaskan pipeline.
That rarity attracted a little known, but surefire star winemaker Jennifer Williams (of Arrow & Branch, Spottswoode) and her husband Mark (of Anomaly and Unwritten). They couldn’t resist using this rare Napa fruit for their personal Zeitgeist Cellars project. The results were so good, in fact, that the winemaking power couple wouldn’t even reveal where the grapes were planted!
Adding to the rarity is that Williams is part of an elite club of 100-point winemakers, with multiple under her belt at this point. So, while we can deliver this one to you for significantly less than the sticker price, there’s no telling if we’ll ever be able to do that again.
Last but not least, per Wine Advocate “Mark Porembski and Jennifer Williams are Zeitgeist, a husband-and-wife winemaking team sourcing fruit from some terrific vineyards, including the likes of Oakville …the wines come across as nicely balanced, not too oaky, not too tannic, but concentrated, rich and remarkably seductive.”
Won’t last the day. Get this Oakville before our entire stash leaves the station.
95 Points – Jeb Dunnuck “Based on 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville is a deeper, slightly more masculine wine that has rocking red currants, cassis, toasted spice, violets and hints of unsmoked tobacco all soaring from the glass. It’s flawlessly balanced, has building yet ripe tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. Drink 2024-2045.”
