Mission Codename Cos you deserve it!
Today’s 2004 Cos d’Estournel is a connoisseur’s secret. And we mean TOP SECRET!
Sandwiched between the hotter 2003 and stunning 2005, the 2004 vintage in Bordeaux fell through the cracks in a way that those in-the-know have been taking advantage of since. And now, with twenty years of maturity, top wines of the vintage like today’s Cos d’Estournel are drinking in their absolute prime!
You could pay close to three times as much for a more famous vintage of this wine, but as a savvy Spy, one taste and you’ll agree with James Suckling’s opinion that “Like so many 2004s, this is so wonderfully drinkable now…”
Today, at the best price in the country, you’ll want to snap up as much as you can of the 10 cases we managed to secure!
As Spies, we have to say that, if ever there was a winery that looked like a secret layer, it is Cos d’Estournel. Moorish architecture, elephant statues, and lavish tapestries decorate the antechamber and main hall, leading to a shockingly sleek, ultra-modern winemaking facility made completely of stainless steel and glass spanning three stories of gravity-fed goodness. When we visit, we are constantly on the lookout for laser-sharks, or a fellow Agent tied to a slowly moving table saw.
But this is not a spy movie. Instead, one’s curiosity is rewarded with the discovery of thoughtfully crafted, terroir-driven wine like today’s 2004 Grand Vin. There is plenty of density to the wine’s black fruit, coupled with hints clove and exotic spices. Its bottle age has graced it with complex notes of tobacco and worn leather that weave together on a long finish.
Whether you are a collector looking to add to your cellar, or you want a top wine now(!) that’s ready to go, it ticks all the boxes.
Their ultra-modern winery is the key to unlocking the terroir of Cos d’Estournel. Owner Michel Reybier has a long history running luxury hotels – where an eye for the finest detail as critical. He brings this same exacting precision to every detail of Cos d’Estournel. Vines are picked block-by-block at peak ripeness, vinified separately in custom fermentation vessels to ensure the wine’s famous dense core of black fruit.
No wonder most critics agree that Cos is the top Super-Second!

‘Cos you deserve it!
95 Points – James Suckling “This is another example of the wonderful 2004 vintage for Bordeaux. They are so delicious to drink now. The Cos is one of the best out there. And very reasonably priced. The charcuterie that hits you as soon as you open this Bordeaux is overwhelming: It’s smoky, spicy and sexy. Minutes later you realize the complexity on offer, catching just a scent of the dark fruits hidden beneath, and before those, long and wonderful hints of balsamic vinegar. On the palate this shows elegance and finesse thanks to fabulous balance, extremely integrated tannins and a long and glorious finish.”
94 Points – Wine Advocate “The 2004 Cos d’Estournel is a blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet in color with a touch of brick, the nose is still very youthful, sporting notions of plum preserves, blackcurrant cordial and Black Forest cake with hints of garrigue, wild sage, charcuterie, black olives and unsmoked cigars. The medium to full-bodied palate is generously fruited with bags of earthy and black fruit preserves layers, framed by chewy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long. Drink 2028-2033”
