Mission Codename Rogue One
“A name to look for.” – Wine Advocate
Well, you’ve found it.
Pinot drinkers, we have something new and exciting for you! Willamette Valley in Oregon has become synonymous with high-quality, terroir-driven, Burgundian-style wines for decades now.
But it is NOT the only trick The Beaver State has up its sleeve!
Bring it into Wine Spies HQ and magically THIS 94-point beauty sheds HALF its price. POOF. Goodbye $50, and hello $25.
Got some? Good. Now you can dig into the details.
The Rogue Valley in Southern Oregon, though better known for its wonderful Shakespeare festival and even better beer, is also a unique terroir. “Somehow, as California and Washington have pushed the limits of exposing terroir, in Oregon, there are not only new and unique locations being discovered within larger AVAs and sub-AVAs, but also new sites throughout the state that are being developed” explains Vinous, and they continue, “This is a much warmer location than the Willamette Valley to the north. However, like its northern neighbor, it enjoys drastic diurnal shifts from day to night that help grapes maintain aromatics and acidity.”
The warmer climate is the key to the fruit purity that immediately reveals itself on the palate. Wafts of spice and earth notes join in a complex harmony, supported by silken tannins and a balance of freshness that lingers. Even our own extra-scrupulous, Burgundy-loving Agent Noir was taken aback!
And at today’s price of $25 a bottle? Pinot rarely gets better.
Founded just under 25 years ago by Doug Roberts and his wife, Dionne Irvine, the winery’s fabulous wines and commitment to sustainability and local community quickly made it a staple of the Ashland area. Critics and media are starting to catch on: recently, they made a list of the top-10 tasting rooms to visit by USA Today! The high altitude and immaculate farming are perfect for structured Pinots with a Burgundian commitment to “sense of place” but a distinctive character unique to Rogue Valley.
“Ultimately, this is a vintage that I’m very excited about and looking forward to exploring in greater depth. As a fan of Oregon wines going back nearly 20 years, the 2022s have a nostalgic feel to them.” Vinous enthused about this vintage.
As bets go, this ‘Editors’ Choice’ is ‘bout as safe as they get!
But you’ll have to act fast and pony up, we promise this will be your new favorite Pinot terroir!
94 Points, Editors’ Choice – Wine Enthusiast “With fruit grown at approximately 2,000 feet above sea level, you can get the brightness of acidity found in the Convergence. The wine’s aromas of orange blossoms, dark raspberries and a forest floor combination of duff and pine needles are enticing. A ripe marionberry pie flavor is joined on the palate by notes of nutmeg and black pepper. This spicy number feels light and nimble, with velvety tannins uniting with acidity that is quite invigorating.”
