Mission Codename My liege
“A stunning rendition.” – Owen Bargreen
My lord, my liege, my LEONETTI!! In our house?!
Collectors, connoisseurs, and cognoscenti alike! Come hither and claim your share of arguably one of the best wines coming out of Washington.
99 points! A sure shot at “Wine of the Night” at your next gathering. At the best price on the globe, of course.
Leonetti was Walla Walla’s first commercial winery, and one of the OG “cult” producers to this day. Founded in 1978 by Gary Figgins, they rapidly ascended the ranks and became one of Washington’s top Cabernet and Merlot producers, helped along by their 1978 Cabernet Sauvignon being recognized as Best in the US in a Wine & Spirits Magazine blind tasting.
Their Merlot and Cabernet are both outstanding, but their “Reserve Red” takes it to another level. Just like Opus did with their blend, elevating it to a new standard and setting a sky-high standard, so did Leonetti with their effort. This Left Bank-inspired blend combines Cabernet with Malbec, and Petite Verdot. It has gobs of black and blue fruit - black plums, blueberry cobbler, blackberry preserves with licorice, cloves, and toasty sweet oak rounding it out. Full throttle, it doesn’t hold anything back, but also remains seamlessly put together with no love handles or flabby parts hanging loose.
We have VERY little of this. Move quickly, as it may not last till Appy Hour even.
99 Points – Owen Bargreen “A stunning rendition of this wine, the 2022 Leonetti ‘Reserve’ is a world-class bottling that combines 75% Cabernet Sauvignon with 19% Malbec, and the remainder Petit Verdot. Arabica bean aromatics combine with shades of loamy soils, dark currant cordial, Cuban cigar and blackberry compote. The palate is viscous and concentrated with serious underlying tension that runs through the core of black and blue fruits. Broad-shouldered and full-bodied, this is a resounding success from a difficult vintage. Tasted over two days, try to resist this beauty for at least another two years. Drink 2027-2050”
97 Points – James Suckling “Black fruit on the nose, such as black plums and blackberries, together with olives, cloves and licorice. It’s full-bodied, fragrant and compact, with firm, creamy tannins. Lovely depth and purity. Great wine. 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Malbec, and 6% Petit Verdot. Try from 2027.”
