Mission Codename Clandestine Claret
We begin with a wine from arguably one of the top properties in the 2019 vintage – at a stunning 50% off: Château Léoville Barton, yes the one that won Wine Spectator’s 2019 Wine of the Year “For its emblematic representation of Bordeaux, emphasis on a great price for a wine of such high quality, incredibly consistent track record and long-running family ownership.”
When we first tried the Château Léoville Barton 2019 ‘La Réserve’ Saint-Julien we were left speechless. The wine delivers tell-tale Saint-Julien power and finesse in a way that is utterly charming. And it is structured to reward cellaring with added complexity for the next 7-10 years, easy. If you appreciate restraint, structure, and classic Bordeaux typicity balance by supple black fruit, we assure you, it’s a must-have.
Neal Martin for Vinous rhapsodized, “There is a slew of joyous Saint-Julien wines in 2019, but there is only one place to start, and that is with the brilliant Léoville-Barton.” He continued his praise for today’s ‘La Réserve,’ the property’s second wine, calling out how it is, “well balanced, very supple, pure and elegant, leading to a delineated finish.”
We urge you, buy a case now before continuing to read. You don’t want to miss out!
We’ll wait…
…are we back?
The 2019 ‘La Réserve’ Saint-Julien is a selection from the younger vines off the property, made with the same care and attention to detail as the Grand Vin overseen by famed winemaker Éric Boissenot (if you don’t know the name, he also oversees the likes of Margaux, Lafite-Rothschild, and Latour!) It seamlessly melds the richness and depth of its majority Cabernet Sauvignon with hints of supple fruitiness of Merlot and a dash of spice and floral complexity from its Cabernet Franc. Aging for around 18 months in French cooperage adds nuance and a pleasant roundness to the mouthfeel. All from the vintage that critic Jane Anson singled out as being of “Superb balance… refined and classical.”
Léoville-Barton is part of the historic Léoville estate that has since been divided into three, all classified Second Growth in 1855. What makes this third of the property special is the stewardship of the Barton family. It is one of only two chateaux still helmed by the same owners since the classification.
Why does this matter? Well, if you ever have the chance to meet Lilian Barton, you will quickly understand. Always humble, her demeanor shows how she and her family have a long tradition of relentlessly investing in the quality of their wines – investments that have paid big dividends through the decades.
Translation: they routinely rival or exceed their neighbors’ quality at a fraction of the price tag.
And here, through a top-secret deal, we can offer their 2019 ‘La Réserve’ Saint-Julien, at half-off – a fraction of a fraction that give this wine an insane QPR. It will have anyone you pour it for fawning over its blackberry fruit and muscular tannins, asking where you managed to find such a deal.
A perfect accompaniment for lamb, beef, roast chicken, or grilled portobello. Stock up now, before it sells out.
92 Points – Decanter “Shiny glossy fruit on the nose, floral and pretty. Bright pink in the glass full of blackcurrant and cherry aromas. Nice plushness on the palate with chewy tannins that have a touch of dryness/chalkiness and drive of fresh red fruit, with some creamy, chalky aspects coming in on the finish. Nicely balanced. It’s balanced and fresh, light and playful. Not showy, but easy. Touch of cedar wood on the edges at the finish. Drink 2023-2030.”
92 Points – Inside Bordeaux (Jane Anson) “Attractive, with personality and texture to the loganberry and blackberry fruit. The muscular tannins have juice running through them, and overall this has plenty of lift and tension while remaining appealingly unfussy. Drink 2025 to 2040.”
