Mission Codename Like father
Deep Cover: 1er Cru Red Burgundy STEAL.
While the white unicorn Savigny-lès-Beaune gets the spotlight today, we were able to top that pallet off with a tiny allocation of a top 1er Cru from Beaune proper under the flagship Burgundy label of Boisset, “one of Burgundy’s biggest names in wine” per Wine Spectator.
Yep, THAT Boisset family, Jean-Claude is JCB’s dad. You can expect the very same famous signature QPR from their wines grown and made on both sides of the Atlantic?! Bring it on.
Quite beastly upon release, vigneron Grégory Patriat calls this “a wine that I just can’t domesticate!” But with half a decade plus in the cellar, it has mellowed out those grippy tannins into a sweet drinking window, especially with the right fare. Don’t get me wrong, though, it’s still a marathon runner, per an early impression by Burgundy Report describing it as “Filling the mouth; supple, velvet-textured, a cushion to the wine, nicely mouth-watering. The most impressive part of this wine today is the breadth and height of the finish - it’s a great finish… a great Beaune with patience though, no doubt.”
Normally seen around $100 upon release, at $55, it’s arguably the best value one can find in 1er Cru red Burgs.
94 Point – Wine Enthusiast “This opulent, richly concentrated Pinot Noir balances glossy cassis and blackberry flavors against a sturdy frame of tannins and seductive whiffs of sauvage. Cellar until 2024 at least; the wine should improve and gain perfume and complexity well through 2035 and hold further still.”
