Mission Codename Gem saver
My lord. My liege. My LEOVILLE!!
“Léoville-Poyferré is certainly the best it has ever been.” – Vinous
Rolland & Cuvelier deliver the goods once again! No doubt 2nd Growth Poyferré is truly as good as St.-Julien gets. And today, you can get a taste of that, as Pavillon is their 2nd wine. Jeb Dunnuck is right, Léoville-Poyferré “has been producing First Growth quality wines for many years now.”
And this bottling is arguably a rarer sight and at 56% OFF with FOUR glowing 93pt reviews!
Drink this while you wait for bigger Bordeaux to mature, per Jeb Dunnuck, Pavillon is “another beautiful 2nd wine that offers Grand Vin-like richness and purity as well as structure” - open for business from the get-go.
A recent deep dive by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate explains the wizardry behind the scenes: “With some 80 hectares under vine, Léoville Poyferré’s parcels are inter-fingered with those belonging to the Delon and Barton families by the river and on the plateau of Saint-Julien… Winemaking features a 5-8 day cold soak, followed by comparatively long macerations, and maturation is in 80% new oak, with lots destined for new barrels completing their malolactic fermentation in barrel… this delivers the richest, fleshiest, most flamboyant of the three Léoville estates, but while it’s generally the most open out of the gates of the three, that hasn’t come at the expense of longevity.”
Vinous adds, “Under the direction of Sara Lecompte Cuvelier, Léoville-Poyferré is certainly the best it has ever been. There is a sense of forward momentum as the page turned upon a century of family-ownership in 2020. It has a distinctive personality that adds diversity to Saint-Julien as an appellation.”
Oh, and it’s one of the few Kosher-certified classified growth Bordeaux, if that matters. What’s also ‘kosher’ is grabbing this under $40 gem by the case while it’s here.
93 Points – Decanter “Deep purple colour in the glass. Heady on the nose, perfumed and floral. Quite strong with the aromas flowing out the glass. Lovely impact straight away, this is clear and well defined, a core of bright fruit - linear and quite a lean style of fruit but good definition supported by gently grippy, chewy tannins. Lots of potential here. I like it, even if the tannins are on the powerful and muscular side right now. Drink 2023-2033.”
93 Points – Jeb Dunnuck “The 2019 Pavillon de Léoville Poyferré is another great second wine in the vintage and has a great bouquet of black cherries, mulberries, spicy incense, and sappy, floral nuances. With medium to full-bodied richness on the palate, it offers terrific complexity, supple yet present tannins, the freshness and elegance of the vintage, and a great finish. It will evolve for 15+ years or more. Drink 2022-2038.”
93 Points – Falstaff “Dark ruby, purple reflections, subtle brightening on the rim. Delicate notes of cassis and blackberries, some wood, candied orange zest, smoky nuances. Complex, juicy, wild blackberries, elegant, lively structure, mineral and good persistence, a refined food wine with a sweet finish and ageing potential.”
93 Points – James Suckling “Attractive blackberry, tobacco and black-truffle aromas follow through to a medium body with ripe, round tannins and a juicy finish. Second wine of Léoville Poyferré. Drink after 2024.”
