Mission Codename The walls have eyes

“This wine is as much about rich, generous opulence as about structure.” – Wine Enthusiast

And whether you use the ‘de’ in its name or not, Clos Vougeot stands alone.

At the heart of the Côte de Nuits, surrounded by Vosne-Romanée, Chambolle-Musigny, and Nuits-Saint-Georges, there is no other terroir remotely like it that represents the golden triangle it forms.

And few négociants are more surgical with attention to detail that goes into raising and making great Grand Crus like the house of Louis Jadot. They claim a mere 5 acres of the 125 farmed in Clos Vougeot, so production is tiny, but quality is substantial. The reviews below speak volumes.

“The thrill of Clos de Vougeot is historical.” says Jancis Robinson, continuing “Vines were first planted there in the 12th century by the austere monastic order based in nearby Citeaux, which they found too marshy for successful viticulture. The Cistercians accumulated land around their original holdings on the slope just south of the village of Vougeot so successfully that by 1336 the vineyard was essentially as it is today, Burgundy’s largest walled vineyard, or clos, with a press house and cellar attached. It was in the hands of a single owner until the late 19th century, when wine from the hallowed Romanée-Conti vineyard was also aged there as it was managed by the same member of the Ouvrard family who owned it for most of the 19th century. Almost incredibly, it had had only two other effective owners in the previous six centuries: the Cistercians until Napoleon confiscated the vineyard in 1790 and then the Ravel family of Parisian bankers. Today, by contrast, Clos de Vougeot is most famous for the number of owners with a plot inside its historic walls – more than 80, many of whom sell their grapes to merchants or other growers – and for being the headquarters of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, France’s most famous vinous brotherhood…”

And that price? It may seem steep at first, but is this any better for the same vintage and vineyard? That’s the equivalent of 15 and a half bottles of this Jadot. Alas, it’s the best price anywhere for this genuine rarity. A true thoroughbred red Burgundy “bargain” of the highest order.

DO NOT MISS - precious little of this beauty was left in the Jadot library.

97 Points – Wine Spectator “Rose, cherry and spice aromas introduce this light-bodied, saturated version. The flavors add wild strawberry, incense and kirsch notes, while remaining persistent on the kaleidoscopic finish. Feels tense now, yet should develop nicely over time. A mineral element lingers. 900 cases made, 100 cases imported. Best from 2023 through 2045.”

96 Points – Wine Enthusiast “Jadot is one of about 80 owners of tiny parcels in this walled, 125-acre vineyard. This wine is as much about rich, generous opulence as about structure. An ethereal fragrance moves into the powerful black fruits and velvet tannins. The wine will develop slowly and surely, ready to drink from 2027.”
