Wine Advocate defines Per Sempre as, “A true Syrah-lover’s wine. It shows the dark exuberance of a Californian Syrah or a Shiraz from Australia with the fragile elegance of a Côte-Rôtie.”

And Vinous calls it “a Syrah built on finesse.”

Expected with a genius like Luca d’Attoma, after putting top Tuscan superstars like Le Pupille and Le Macchiole on the map, leading Tua Rita, while also consulting for a myriad of others across the globe. Full list here.

Decanter has the history of how Tua Rita rose to the very top: “Tua Rita makes some of Italy’s most exciting and collectible red wines. Its story began in 1984, when Virgilio Bisti and his wife Rita Tua purchased a small two-hectare property in Suvereto in the Alta Maremma, with just half a hectare of Sangiovese. In the beginning, their dream was simply to have a more rural life close to the land, but soon a passion for wine took over. In 1988, two more hectares were added, planted – against the local trend – with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon which Tua Rita felt suited the site and some of which found their way into nearby Tenuta San Guido’s Sassicaia. In 1992, Virgilio and Rita took on one of Italy’s best consultant oenologists, Luca d’Attoma, and started bottling their own wine.”

They add “Virgilio’s favourite was the charmingly named Per Sempre (‘Forever’): when asked what his favourite wine was, he would say ‘per sempre’. This is a powerful, world-class 100% Syrah which seems to go from strength to strength.”

99 Points – James Suckling “The purity of fruit on the nose is really something, with violets, lavender, sandalwood, light white pepper and white roses. Medium-bodied with totally integrated tannins that give a silky texture and a long finish. A pure syrah with lots of class for the vintage. Drink or hold.”

96 Points – Wine Advocate “The Tua Rita 2022 Syrah Per Sempre draws its precious fruit from a half-hectare parcel planted in 1998 and another parcel planted in 2004. The advanced age of the vines adds to the complexity and depth of the wine with dark plum, sweet spice, toast and campfire ash. Per Sempre ages in oak for 18 months with 80% new wood and 20% second-use barrique. Syrah does a great job of balancing its fruit against the integrated oak. The wine makes a big impact on the senses thanks to its open-knit texture and generous concentration. On the palate, it is firm but also fresh, and both these qualities bode well for its aging potential. Drink 2026-2048.”

96 Points – Decanter “Per Sempre is one parcel of 18 rows planted in 1988, equating to 0.5ha and 3,000 bottles. Unlike the tava-vinified Keir Syrah, this spends about 17 months in new barriques. Less perfumed and vertical, Per Sempre is instead fleshy and generous, with more complexity and palate width. Intense crushed black berries are framed by wood, with some floral overtones and a streak of red fruit. Earthy and dusty tones are followed by mid-palate tension and sapidity, finishing on a slightly smoky note along with pressed violets. Class. Drink 2023-2036.”
