Mission Codename Clos to perfection

“Top quality producer.” – Decanter

Top Secret, too! Today only – two unbelievable Chablis deals – so crazy they could only be Dual Deep Covers!

(Check out the other one from William Fèvre here!)

There are numerous members of the Moreau clan, and sorting out who relates to whom, if and how, is like trying to solve a Rubik’s Cube in the dark. The International Wine & Food Society takes a good stab at it: “Moreau is an old, very common producer name in Chablis. J. MOREAU had many choice historic vineyards plus a wine negociant company that they sold in the mid-eighties to Hiram Walker. CHRISTIAN MOREAU (now an outstanding top producer) bought back those vineyards, resulting in their first vintage from them in 2002. There is another part of the family dating back to 1814, producing LOUIS MOREAU, now in their 6th generation, producing excellent Chablis over all 4 levels of the appellation. You can also find the newer MOREAU NAUDET (no relation to the above-mentioned 3 Moreau producers) run by the late Stephane Moreau-Naudet, producing Chablis in a low-yielding, riper, richer style. Try them all and appreciate their differences.”

Per Wine Advocate, our spotlight Moreau today, “Domaine Louis Moreau is a 50-hectare estate that produces attractively textural but precise wines that are fermented and matured in stainless steel. Using ambient microflora and élevage that now extends for as long as two years, these are wines that seem to be gaining in interest with every passing vintage.”

Regardless of Louis being one of the top “Moreau,” we’re talking LES CLOS here, dear Operatives. AKA ‘the Montrachet’ of Chablis. It’s by a long mile, the choicest terroir, arguably the most distinctive stretch of Chardonnay anywhere on the planet.

Vinous explains that “The soil in Les Clos yields wines with density and fullness, but the marl also brings powerful minerality and finishing firmness to the wines, especially where the soil features a high calcium carbonate content in the clay. Through the years, successful bottlings of Clos have struck me as combining the best traits of Montrachet and Corton-Charlemagne. That’s high praise, I know, but hardly an exaggeration, at least when it comes to wines from the finest estates. In the context of other Chablis Crus, Les Clos delivers an unmatched combination of aromatic complexity, power, depth, mineral cut, and longevity. He is particularly slow to reveal its full personality.”

Yet on the contrary, you need to be fast to secure yours as this one is HIGHLY LIMITED!

95 Points – Decanter “Top quality producer. Quite a different, cool, fresh character on the nose. Louis Moreau always aims to pick early to preserve freshness. Lemon-lime citrus characters dominate the palate, giving lots of vibrant acidity, balancing the concentrated fruit notes, and providing a great backdrop for future ageing. Needs two or three years to settle in the bottle, and it’s a keeper. Drink 2026-2034.”

95 Points, Cellar Selection – Wine Enthusiast “This is slowly developing into a beautiful wine. It dazzles with its combination of fresh acidity and generously ripe yellow-fruit flavors. The texture and structure give a steely edge to this impressive wine. Drink from 2020.”

94 Points – Tim Atkin MW “A lovely harmony has already settled into this wine. It is riper and rounder than the ‘classic’ Les Clos with a determined juiciness provided by appealing, upfront tangerine fruit. As it opens, the forward fruit characters are nicely contrasted by toasty leesiness. The mid-palate is richer but so well balanced that it feels every bit as focused and balanced.”

94 Points – Wine Spectator “This white’s creamy texture is offset by lively acidity that frames its lemon, yuzu, floral and vanilla flavors. Tense and racy, picking up mineral and herbal accents on the long finish. Drink now through 2032.”
