Mission Codename MM GE

“2019 in Burgundy was a revelation – the ripeness of the fruit balancing well with firm acidity – making it a vintage that can be enjoyed both young or with a degree of cellaring… estate owner Michael Baum recommends trying to put these wines away to age – that’s if temptation does not stand in the way.” – Victor Smart, The Buyer

That temptation only grows when you get 50-66% OFF great red Burgundy. It’s like when a friend invites you to the ballgame you could not land tickets to.

Clos Marey-Monge! If you’re a Burgundy nut, you’ve seen the family name before. A Nicolas-Joseph Marey bought Romanée-Saint-Vivant in 1791; later leasing it to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti until they purchased it in 1988. That same family established the Clos Marey-Monge at Château de Pommard in 1795, becoming its own estate.

So, the lineage of these two wines in the store today, their micro-cuvees from precise ‘lieu dit’ terroirs, or tiny plots that show specificity within distinct soils top and sub, microclimates, aspects, etc, that set them apart just like the bigger picture ‘climats’ throughout the rest of the Côte d’Or.

In plain English, buy some of both and get blown away by the subtle differences of two wines otherwise grown side by side in a prime Pommard vineyard protected by walls surrounding the gorgeous Château.

Come geek out further with us and visit their site here that brilliantly presents all the compelling reasons why these noble wines need to be experienced side by side. The variations are dizzying as the wines themselves!

As Burgundy Report wrote, *“the Château de Pommard is virtually unique in Burgundy… sold only at the Château and shipped directly to customers all over the world. So these are rarely seen out in the wild, and never discounted; they were closeouts on the last few cases in the library.

95 Points, Editors’ Choice – Wine Enthusiast “The Grands Esprits has the highest limestone content of all the plots of Clos Marey-Monge and this supple, silky Pinot Noir with vibrant acidity and firm, angular tannins is a fantastic representation of this terroir. Red cherry and raspberry flavors are intensely ripe yet zesty, accented by tangs of tart blood orange and a deep granitic undertone. Approachable young, the wine is likely to improve through 2035 and hold further still.”

94 Points – Falstaff “An earthy touch and a spicy hint of nettle accompany the less obvious red fruit of this wine. There is the ripe, red cherry of 2019 and a hint of tart berry. The palate also holds back on its elegant fruit and for now boasts both a firm structure with ripe tannins and a certain creamy richness, well countered by inherent freshness. This is muscular and taut and has lovely depth. Very Pommard.”
