Mission Codename Penultimate pleasure

Eagle-eyed Operatives will remember this 100 POINT cult St.-Émilion favorite from its former sell-out missions.

When offered an allocation of the legendary 2018 vintage, our only question was, “how much can we have?!”

Per Robert Parker Beauséjour is “undeniably one of the great terroirs in all of Bordeaux.”

2018 was the first in a trio of spectacular vintages for Bordeaux, taking the already generous concentrated black fruit that is the hallmark of the property and dialing it up passed eleven. Filled with velvety tannins and layer upon layer of flavors, it is a wine for decades of enjoyment. One, “should certainly have bottles in the cellar,” according to Jeb Dunnuck.

The bad news? We could only source less than FOUR cases of it.

Direct from the Château of course – the provenance is impeccable. Double 100-point scores and less than $150 – the best price anywhere – you’re getting a Right Bank legend crafted under the watchful eye of not one, but TWO consultants extraordinaire Nicolas Thienpont and Stéphane Derenoncourt. You may know them from some of his other clients such as Pavie Macquin, Smith Haut Lafitte, or Les Carmes Haut-Brion, to name a few.

The second to the last vintage under their watchful eye. Already a collector’s dream, we recommend you grab this and only share it with your closest friends.

100 Points – Inside Bordeaux “The 10th vintage under the Nicolas Thienpont team, and as it has turned out the penultimate one. Impossible to leave out of my top 50 for laying down because this is easily one of the wines of the vintage, and should form part of any cellar that is looking to reflect the best of 2018. Black cherry and damson fruit roll out layer upon layer, with slate, crushed rocks and baked earth ensuring the progress through the palate is slow and steady, with mouthwatering freshness building up as you go. It’s serious and needs time, but it’s fantastic, and takes you right inside this discreet corner of the St Emilion limestone plateau. Half the normal yield, down in the mid-20hl/h. Drink 2028 – 2048.”

100 Points – Falstaff “Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, delicate bright rim. Fine nougat, black berry fruit, delicate spices, candied orange zest, mineral touch. Full-bodied, tight-knit, great complexity, ripe cherries, fresh acid structure, pronounced fruit finish, perfect tannins, lingers for minutes, sweet fruit finish, built for decades, really convincing wine.”

99 Points – James Suckling “Aromas of blackcurrant, ripe blackberry, black olive, oyster shell and black tea. Some ash and dried flowers, too. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, tight-grained tannins. Sleek and compact with a savory, mineral finish. Great length and depth. Wonderful texture. Such precision. Try from 2026.”
