Mission Codename Opus: The One, the ONLY!

Deep, Deep Cover: OPUS POCUS! It’s not Halloween yet, but we’re working some serious magic over here at HQ.

And listen - as much as you might be tempted, PLEASE don’t tell anyone what you pay for Opus One, lest the well go dry. Just tell them you paid the $500 price - it’ll sound more like a flex that way. We want to stay offering this legend when it comes around at these rock bottom prices!

If you’re reading this, you’re one of the few receiving the offer. We expect it to go fast, get some NOW before it’s gone. (Also be sure to check out their ULTRA-RARE second wine, the 2022 Overture – only a handful of bottles!)

This wine needs no introduction or explanation. The product of Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild is never cheap. But as always, we have AN UNBELIEVABLE PRICE! – albeit on a VERY LIMITED number of bottles. We begged for more, but it is what it is.

As always, it brings big scores, with a 97 and double 96’s!

Under the direction of winemaker Michael Silacci, they have pushed the envelope even further each year. He’s been at the helm since 2001. The result is a hedonistic but dialed-in and balanced example of Napa Cabernet’s highest potential.

The painstaking level of detail is unmatched. Consider this: they isolated 50 strains of native yeast in the vineyards and picked six favorites. There was no 2020 Opus One made, so after the 2019, this is the 3rd vintage fermented entirely on carefully cultivated native yeasts. The resulting translation of terroir into the bottle has never been clearer.

100% new French Oak as always. Cabernet leads again, with supporting roles by other Bordeaux grapes. Beautiful purity of fruit radiates with macerated cherries and dark chocolate, violets, graphite, and minerality galore. Obviously, you can enjoy it now after at least a few hours of breathing in a decanter. But we encourage you to give it a few years, if not a decade or longer, and it will really sing.

MEOW! Just testing to see if you’re still reading this?! Why are you? The few cases we have may already be gone.

97 Points – Decanter “Chocolate, cherry and rose petal aromas on the nose. Very open and alive - this has a great energy from the aromatics alone with soft cedar shavings, vanilla bean and bramble fruit. Juicy and lively, this is full of fun - fruity and concentrated. The tannins are just wonderful, creamy and slightly grippy, extending the flavours vertically. Tons of juicy, succulent fruit - this feels quite modern but still with that flash of sunshine and ripeness. Long lasting with purity and delicacy that make it so enjoyable. A wonderful creation from Michael Silacci. This is not your typical blockbuster at all, this is a darling of a wine. 0.5% Malbec completes the blend. The Opus team chose to pick early and quickly given the heat spikes in 2022, starting with the Merlot on 24th August. Ageing 18 months in French oak. Drink 2027 – 2045”

96 Points – James Suckling “Generous, with savory aromas of ripe blackcurrants and fresh black cherries and a gentle texture that shows a slight nip of tannin. It is well structured and a bit tight, which is normal for a young cabernet sauvignon-based red that’s a proven collectible. Gives up graphite and pencil shavings, some cocoa and espresso. Full-bodied. Spicy, toasty oak is really showing through right now. Best from 2028.”

96 Points – Inside Bordeaux “Smoky, fragrant and powerful, this has clear intensity with tightly-grained tannins. With coaxing, the body of the wine softens to show chalky tannins, crushed rose petals and violet flowers, impressive delicacy to the aromatics despite the heat of this vintage. Great stuff, once again showing how Opus knows when to take the foot off the pedal, how to swerve towards grace. Picking was exceptionally early, coming on August 24 for the Merlot, as they reacted to the forecast for a big heat dome. Michael Silacci director. Drink 2030 – 2045” Deep, Deep Cover: Please don’t tell anyone what you pay for Opus One so that we can keep offering some to you when we can at these rock bottom prices!

When it comes to higher-priced Napa Valley cabs, the main question is: "Is it really worth the price?" Yes, Opus One is worth it! Having worked there for a couple of years, I can confidently say the time, energy, and care that goes into each bottle is worth every cent.
