Mission Codename a-Muse us!
“Melka is a member of the wine illuminati.” – Fortune
Today’s wine – its a complex little muse. Bright, refreshing, vibrant Sauvignon Blanc crafted by Philippe Melka(?!), this 93-pointer is a steal at full price, but at 50% off?!
Trust us – you just found your new house white.
Anyone who has paid any attention to the wines of Napa over the last three decades knows the name Melka. “Any mention of the Melka name is often preceded by some iteration of ‘100-point winemaker,’” explains Food & Wine. His résumé is a massive list of Napa’s most elite (Lail, Hundred Acre, Vineyard 29, Dana Estates, and many more…).
But few know this: Philippe Melka has quietly changed how people think about Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc. Melka ‘Mekerra’, Lail ‘Georgia’, Dana Estates Hershey Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc… list the top Sauvignon Blancs in Napa and you will quickly see that Melka makes (or once made) more of them than anyone. Period. Critics routinely praise their depth, texture, and precision with lavish scores. His proficiency with the grape is mind-meltingly profound (his best with equally mind-melting prices of $150+!).
Which takes us to today’s beauty. Fermented and aged entirely in stainless steel, this wine channels old-world restraint with new-world precision. Crisp citrus, green apple, and white peach fruit underpinned by bright acidity, finishing long and clean. It’s a vibrant, textural, and pure expression of the variety.
So, what’s the story? Museion is the passion project of the Hernández family. But it’s more than that. It’s a broad vision of a winery could be – blending wine, art, music, tasting spaces, and even a speak easy into one of the craziest, coolest new wineries in Napa. And it’s huge. Built on the massive site of the old Calistoga Mineral Water Company, its custom crush facility is quickly becoming a haven for top winemakers. As Wine Spectator explains, “the facility is 125,000 square feet (nearly three acres!), making it one of the largest, if not the largest, sites devoted to winemaking I’ve ever been in. As we walked from one enormous room to another, it was easy to see how useful the facility is for Museion’s few dozen clients. The space was somehow both busy and quiet. Bottling trucks can comfortably drive in and fit inside. Equipment is widely spaced. It’s perhaps a bit bare bones, but that’s part of its appeal. I’ve never heard a winemaker wish they had less space to work in.”
If you are looking for the next big winery in Napa, it doesn’t get any bigger. Well worth the visit – especially with their own wines crafted by Melka!
The name Museion is a reference to the Greek temple of the muses. Their Sauvignon Blanc is dedicated to Clio, the muse of history. You see, decades ago, on a visit to the valley Jorge Hernández proposed to his wife Ana overlooking the same vines that now grow grapes for this Sauvignon Blanc. In this bottle, history has come full circle.
We told you – a surprising little muse! Melka made Sauvignon Blanc from the biggest new winery in Napa… at 50% off?!
Don’t know about you, but this muse has inspired us to buy a few cases!!!
93 Points – Decanter “Museion’s Sauvignon Blanc is bright, vivid, and focused, with lovely depth of pure, clean flavours on both the nose and palate. Medium-bodied, it offers crisp, zesty grapefruit and saline-tinged acidity, while a host of creamy citrus fruits mingle with ripe orchard fruit, nuanced by honeycomb. The finish is long and refined, with hints of seagrass and flinty minerality. Produced by Atelier Melka, this is a terrific, delicious, and structured Sauvignon Blanc from Napa Valley. Drink 2025 – 2029”
