Mission Codename The writing on the clos
“I have long been a huge fan of older vintages of Clos l’Eglise, so I am hard-pressed to say that the 2009 Clos l’Eglise could be any better than her brilliant efforts in such vintages as 2000, 2001, and 2005.” – Robert Parker
Guess what? We have TWO of those! The 2009 here, and a tiny bit of the 2000 too, at a price too low to show out in the open, so it’s hidden in the App as an exclusive for the day.
Collectors know that Pomerol offers the most exotic of all Bordeaux. Add some decades of age to the best examples, and you have one of the most hedonistic experiences the wine world has to offer.
When we got the opportunity to tap DIRECTLY into the winery cellars at Clos L’Eglise, one of those cult names wine lovers all over the globe clamor for, we did not blink and took all that there was of the 2009 and 2000, cherry picking the greatest vintages for you. Yes, we HAD TO taste… somebody must! 😎
Per Jeb Dunnuck “Dating back to the 18th century, Clos L’Eglise is situated in the heart of Pomerol, on Bordeaux’s Right Bank of the Gironde Estuary. The estate covers 5.9 hectares of the gravelly, clay plateau located in the center of the appellation, with L’Eglise-Clinet and Clinet to the south, Le Gay and Lafleur to the east, and Latour A Pomerol and Feytit-Clinet to the west.” What an address, ha!
In a magnificent vertical tasting back to 1998, he wrote, “My favorite of the tasting was the 2009, and this gorgeous effort offers massive richness while still possessing the classic elegance this appellation is known for. Time will tell if the 2010, 2015, 2016, 2018, and 2019 will reach the same level, but for current drinking, the 2009 is pure gold.”
We agree. PURE gold. Yet these library releases are priceless wines. But they need prices to sell, and I’ll tell you what, they are PRICED TO SELL. In fact, they are bucket list, once-in-a-lifetime wines that we are beyond proud to offer so affordably.
Letting the reviewers speak, if I were you, grab as much as your budget expands, think one of those elastic waist pants and an open buffet of caviar and foie gras with minimal guilt attached.
Why? Cause you know it, life is short!
98 Points – Wine Advocate “The 2009 is one of the sexiest wines in Pomerol in this vintage, offering up notes of melted caramel, sweet mocha, blackberry and black cherry fruit, with hints of loamy soil and unsmoked cigar tobacco as well as a touch of white chocolate and some subtle toasty oak. Round, opulent, and unctuously textured, with a full-bodied mouthfeel, fabulous purity, and no hard edges, this sumptuous, fleshy, lavishly rich Pomerol can be drunk now and over the next 25 years. Drink 2012-2037.”
98 Points – Jeb Dunnuck “A true superstar that flirts with perfection, the 2009 Clos L’Eglise checks in at the top of the heap of great vintages, including 1998, 2000, 2005, and 2016. Still youthful ruby/plum-hued with a spectacular bouquet of chocolatey black cherry and currant fruits, graphite, leafy herbs, unsmoked tobacco, and a kiss of earth, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness as well as an incredible sense of opulence with no weight or heaviness. The usual blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, it has ripe, polished tannins, stunning purity of fruit, a great mid-palate, and is just a magical, heavenly Pomerol to enjoy over the coming 15-20 years. Drink 2020-2040.”
