Mission Codename Telling you 2000 times
Appy Friday with “a Pomerol that has it all” per Jeb Dunnuck!
All? Wow. We do like ALL. Which is why we have TWO today! The 2000 here, and the 2009 as part of our Cellar Stocker: Bordeaux Edition 2026 lineup for the day.
Today marks the very first 2000 vintage Bordeaux ever offered on Wine Spies, and not just one, but two, with the 2000 Clos du Marquis by LLC standing out in today’s insane deals. As a reminder, per Wine Advocate “it’s the greatest vintage Bordeaux has ever produced. Remarkably consistent from top to bottom, there has never before been a year where so many exceptional wines were produced.”
Some big words…
Collectors know that Pomerol offers the most exotic of all Bordeaux. Add some decades of age to the best examples, and you have one of the most hedonistic experiences the wine world has to offer.
When we got the opportunity to tap DIRECTLY into the winery cellars at Clos L’Eglise, one of those cult names wine lovers all over the globe clamor for, we did not blink and took all that there was of the 2000 and 2009, cherry picking the greatest vintages for you. Yes, we HAD TO taste… somebody must! 😎
Per Jeb Dunnuck “Dating back to the 18th century, Clos L’Eglise is situated in the heart of Pomerol, on Bordeaux’s Right Bank of the Gironde Estuary. The estate covers 5.9 hectares of the gravelly, clay plateau located in the center of the appellation, with L’Eglise-Clinet and Clinet to the south, Le Gay and Lafleur to the east, and Latour A Pomerol and Feytit-Clinet to the west.” What an address, ha!
In a magnificent vertical tasting back to 1998, he wrote, “. Walking through the vintages, both the 1998 and 2000 are powerful, concentrated Pomerols drinking brilliantly today. These are both fully mature yet blossom with air and have plenty of life ahead of them. There is no need to delay gratification with these. ”
Hear that? Do not delay! And these library releases are priceless wines. But they need prices to sell, and I’ll tell you what, they are PRICED TO SELL. In fact, they are bucket list, once-in-a-lifetime wines that we are beyond proud to offer so affordably.
Letting the reviewers speak, if I were you, grab as much as your budget expands, think one of those elastic waist pants and an open buffet of caviar and foie gras with minimal guilt attached.
Why? Cause you know it, life is short!
96 Points – Wine Advocate “Seven years ago I said this was a monumental wine, and at two different recent tastings, it was a true star of the vintage. Its stunning dark plum color offers up notes of caramelized red and black fruits, toffee, smoke, Asian plum sauce, sweet cherries, chocolate, and espresso. Its spectacular aromatics do not disappoint on the palate, as this multi-dimensional, highly complex, opulent wine seems to have hit a magical point in its evolution. Full-bodied, and concentrated, there is no issue with drinking this dazzling effort now, but those who own it can certainly cellar it for another 15 or more years. Bravo!”
96 Points – Jeb Dunnuck “In the same league as the 1998, 2009, 2010, and 2016, the 2000 Clos L’Eglise reveals a healthy ruby/plum hue as well as mature notes of dried red and black fruits, tobacco, mint, and leafy herbs, with a touch of chocolate and spice emerging with time in the glass. The wine is full-bodied, concentrated, and seamless on the palate, with incredible purity and elegance as well as length. It’s a Pomerol that has it all: incredible complexity and nuance, full-bodied richness and depth, and an inherent sense of elegance and purity. As with the 1998, it’s fully mature yet is certainly going to hold for another decade. There’s no need to delay gratification, however. Drink now-2030.”
