Mission Codename Marengo-round
“Marco Marengo’s Barolos are consistently outstanding…” – Antonio Galloni
Barolo fans – think you can’t possibly find a 97pt aromatically expressive, elegant, and refined Cru Barolo for under $100? How about under $60?!…
Established in 1899, Marco Marengo is the fifth generation of his family to farm this vineyard in commune of Barolo. Chilean soil guru Pedro Parra is a massive fan of Marengo. In his book Terroir Footprints, Parra underlines that Marco is a true winegrower, “he is exactly the type of producer who is more concerned about his vineyard than with being a modernist or traditionalist.”
As a single vineyard, Bricco delle Viole is special. It’s one of the highest altitude vineyards in the region at nearly 1500 ft above sea level. The diurnal shift provided by its height amplify the wines aromas, while its south-west exposure ensures access to the warmer afternoon sun, providing optimal ripeness.
And in a classic vintage like 2021? Whispers already compare it to 2016 and 2010 for its combination of structure, elegance, and freshness. Across the board it’s amazing, but in the hands of an adept like Marengo? Excelsior!
Barolo doesn’t get much more expressive or elegant than this. 97-points and under $60?! It’s not too good to be true – It’s CYBER MONDAY!
97 Points – James Suckling “This wine is transparent and complex, with an intoxicating floral profile enhanced by mint, red currants and sweet spices. The wine is full-bodied, fruity and savory, with a powerful structure of firm, grainy tannins and ripe, refreshing, lifted acidity. Try after 2027.”
96 Points – Wine Advocate “M. Marengo has released a line of delicate, elegant and phenomenal wines. Only the 2023 Nebbiolo d’Alba Vigna Valmaggiore, from a challenging vintage, is out of character. The other wines I tasted from 2021 are all excellent, and the pricing is competitive, considering the vintage and the appellation. Always one of my favorites in this portfolio, the M. Marengo 2021 Barolo Bricco delle Viole manages a beautiful balance between intensity and elegance. The wine is not timid, nor does it reveal all its secrets at once. It offers a slow-motion performance of redcurrant, crushed flower and sweet violet. As always, this Barolo produces a floral signature that makes it unique. That delicate characteristic is especially defined and vibrant in this vintage. Drink 2026 – 2045”
