Mission Codename Lighting the way
Wake up, Ops! We have a MEGA BLACK FRIDAY opportunity primed for you. No need to battle the hordes at Best Buy or Target. Grab a coffee, fire up the App, or log in from the comfort of your couch to lock down what is surely the best deal this year.
Got a friend who needs to fortify their stash? Invite them too. The brass at HQ have approved a generous increase in recruitment bounties this week: doubling up from $20 to $40 for you, and a generous $30 for your Operatives lying in wait.
Pretty much everyone agrees that the 2015 Firefly by Anthony Beckman was one of the best wines they had ever tried:
“At $25 perhaps the best QPR purchase I have ever made.”
“Kicking myself on this one! I should’ve bought 3 cases instead of just one. Another big bang for the buck from Wine Spies!”
“Let’s vote: best Cabernet for $25 or less. This is my entry.”
The 2015 Firefly went down in history as one of the most loved offers this year, as those leading quotes from Ops in our group pay testament to what an incredible offer the 2015 Firefly was at $25.
Naturally, we had to go back to the well and see if we could scare up more. And then leveled up with an even lower price than before on an even older vintage?! We have a staggering amount of this incredible deal to share today… howeva… will it be enough?
This time, we stretch back to 2008.
And the price? Somehow, it’s even LOWER.
To get your hands on a near-two-decade-old Napa Cabernet for under $20?! Absurd!
Firefly is a small family-run producer, and their winemaker, Anthony Beckman, has experience at Peay, Hudson, and Balletto Vineyards. And, apparently, making a killer Cab that can stand alongside - and probably straight up crush just about ANY of the $100+ examples out there.
NINETEEN DOLLARS people! We loaded up as much as we could for this monster deal. Get in on the action and lock it down.
When I moved to Napa in 2009, the 2007 vintage was getting all the love. 2008 brought lower yields, higher acid, bigger, grippier tannins, and lower alcohol levels. Which, in the short term, made for more rugged, closed, and unapproachable wines. But in the long term, it seems to have fared far better.
In 2018, when Stephen Tanzer of Vinous revisited the vintage, he wrote, “In my extensive tastings of these wines ten years later, the better bottles stood out not only for their concentration but for their harmoniousness—and often for their silky, even chocolatey sweetness, plush middle palates with surprising definition, and smooth, integrated tannins. They are fun to drink today but they have the energy and balance to go on for another decade or more - and possibly much longer than that.”
And after tasting this, we have further proof solidifying that testament. The quality here is, quite simply, off the meter.
Firefly’s “Nicole” bottling has developed wonderfully over the years. With a strong core of fruit present, and fully resolved, soft tannins, plus the acidity to carry it. Dusty plum, spiced cherry, and cassis still play starring roles. But the secondary nuances of graphite, leather, and dried tobacco and gentle baking spices all join the party, like those concentric circles on a target, blossoming from the core of fruit and framing it all in perfect balance.
Remember that Price is Right game, the cliffhanger one? Where you guess the price of something, and for every dollar you’re off, the little yodel hiker guy chugs along until he plummets off the edge?
Everyone, including us, would fail miserably if this offer were on the board. If you love aged Cabs, it just doesn’t get much better than this for the price. No games needed. Everybody wins today!!!
