A literal legend. No hyperbole here. Steven Spurrier is one of the names in the wine industry that few would argue that he changed the world.

Steven masterminded the 1976 Judgement of Paris tasting with Patricia Gallagher – an event which revolutionized the world of wine. It brought California wine to the forefront and forced Europe to take notice.

As a writer, winemaker and educator, Steven bounced between New York City, England and Paris in his yearly career. He purchased Cave de la Madeleine in Paris in 1971 and opened L’Académie du Vin, France’s first private wine school.

He continued to be in love with wine and was truly inspired by the chalky South facing slopes of his wife Bella’s sheep farm in Dorset, England. After years of research and being keenly aware of the potential for growing vines, in 2008, Steven and Bella went to Burgundy’s famous Pepinieres Guillaume vine nursery to hand pick rootstock for their sparkling wine.

Thus they jumped into the English wine revolution!

The Chalk bedrock and chalky soils mirror Montagne de Reims in the heart of the Champagne region which is how Steven knew it was possible. 10 hectacres under vine later, and a perfect climate for sparkling wines from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, Steven and Bella’s dream took off.

Hugh Johnson said of the project, “Steven’s bubbly started to become a picture of his palate: precise, intense, sophisticated, acute. What could be more satisfying in a critic’s life than to write the masterpiece he has been pursuing for so long?

A wow indeed. Today, the project continues though Steven passed away in 2021. The team continues the legacy Steven and Bella started with the help of Jean-Charles Boisset.
