Mission Codename The Tycoon
“Harlan Estate might be the single most profound red wine made not just in California, but in the world.” – Robert Parker
Stand aside, Screaming Eagle, our first Harlan in the house!
One of the most sought-after names in Napa. Always bagging perfect or near-perfect scores, and the 2012 vintage was no exception, especially with age.
Oh, and we want to make sure it’s reached perfection by now, so we’re opening one for you LIVE. Yes, ONLY for YOU. We sacrifice like that. Also want to come to the bottom of that age-worthiness confusion as critics differ on that, some think it’s not going past 2037, some add 3 decades plus to that, hmm, tune in to see who we think is right. The things we do for research and development…
And while prices for these wines will only continue to rise, you can bag one of the few bottles we have for under $1k. Good luck seeing another again!
100 Points – The Wine Palate “(Tasted August, 2025) Deep garnet with a touch of brick, the 2012 Harlan shimmies out with expressive notes of iron ore, rose bud tea, and chocolate mint, leading to a core of cherry preserves, prunes, and blueberry pie, with a waft of underbrush. The full-bodied palate is light on its feet and elegantly styled with perfumed black and blue fruit and fine-grained tannins, supported by seamless freshness, finishing long and fragrant. Drink 2025-2050.”
99+ Points – Wine Advocate “(Tasted October, 2015) The 2012 Harlan Estate is reminiscent of their 2002. Probably a candidate for perfection with another 4-5 years of bottle age, the wine is inky plum/purple to the rim and offers a gorgeous nose of scorched earth, blackberry and cassis, forest floor, and a floral, lavender-like component followed by deep, opulent, majestic flavors that caress the palate with high but sweet tannin. This is relatively evolved, and supple and voluptuous for a young Harlan Estate – hence the comparison with their compelling 2002. This wine can be drunk in several years and is likely another candidate for 30-50 years of cellaring. Drink 2018-2068.”
99 Points – Vinous “(Tasted May, 2024) Some of the best 2012s are outrageously beautiful. Many arrived at their tenth birthdays in great shape. I was pleased and impressed with how the wines showed. The 2012 Harlan Estate is bright, delicate, and understated. Sweet red cherry, kirsch, mint, blood orange and mocha. Sweet red cherry, pomegranate, spice, and blood orange lend vibrancy. There’s terrific energy and tension from the late-ripening vintage, and a bit more oak tannin than there is these days, but all the elements are so well balanced. Drink 2022-2037.”
