Trivia time: What is the smallest Grand Cru Classé?
At just 3.5ha (just over 8.5 acres), Château Romer only produces 500 cases of wine a year. But this golden elixir – dripping with pineapple and tropical fruits, honey, dried apricot, spicy ginger notes, and a taut through-line of acidity – is worth seeking out!
Today is your chance to try this rare gem. For less than $30!
“Ch Romer and Romer du Hayot, neighboring properties, once part of the same estate. The one that I would particularly look out for is Romer, the smallest Barsac classified estate in production…” critic Jane Anson explains in her definitive guide, Inside Bordeaux.
She has, indeed, looked out for it – calling out the 2018 as a ” A great vintage from this excellent quality 3.5ha Sauternes estate,” and awarding it 94 points.
Small but mighty, this land is so precious, such great terroir, that back in the 1800’s, the heyday of Sauternes worldwide, it was under the same stewardship as Château d’Yquem! In 1855 it was one of the 26 properties designated Grand Cru Classé in Sauternes. Sadly, shortly thereafter, the property was split between inheritors. In 1911, both were sold, the smallest parcel bought by the Farges family (the other by the du Hayot family). Eventually, they stopped making Romer altogether and rented the vines to their neighbor.
In 2002, the label was finally revived. Now under the ownership of François Janoueix, with in influx of investment in its quality, it’s just going to keep getting better and better.
Because Sauternes ages oh-so-beautifully, consider this – at only 500 cases made there isn’t much to go around. And this is a property whose star is on the rise. Just sayin… If you stock your cellar now, for years you can enjoy telling your friends how OG you are. How you knew about Romer, before it was cool!
94 Points – Jane Anson (Inside Bordeaux) “Fresh and vibrant, serve chilled to emphasize the juicy fresh apricots and yellow peach fruits, this has the rich mid-palate richness of Sauternes while not being overly sweet, given lift by a touch of ginger on the finish. A great vintage from this excellent quality 3.5ha Sauternes estate, located in Fargues de Langon, run by François Janoueix. Drink 2023-2043.”
