Mission Codename Solosotto
“Ethereal and utterly beguiling, this has me in raptures just as the 2019 did almost a year ago.” – The Drinks Business
There are three “untouchable” Brunello producers: Soldera, Biondi Santi, and THIS.
Scores stacked sky high! From 97 to near-perfect 99 points! This is Brunello at its absolute best.
Wine Enthusiast describes it perfectly: “like entering an entirely new universe.”
We’ve been BEGGING for allocations for SEVEN years. Those dreams finally came true last year when we were bestowed with…drumroll… SIX BOTTLES.
And then came the 2019 “closeout” opportunity that some of you grabbed as an App Exclusive earlier this year. Obviously, as “Sotto” and “closeout” should not belong in the same sentence, that little stash disappeared in hours.
Well, dear Ops, they are BACK with another vintage. One that “shares many similarities with the epic 2016 vintage”. And just as before, we have it at the best price anywhere!
Per Wine Advocate, “These wines renewed my faith in the enormous potential of Montalcino. I wrote about the ‘soul of Brunello’ in my introductory article and played around with a definition of what that means. You could read my words or just pop your nose into a glass with any one of the wines reviewed here, and that spirit would be revealed to you. Not only did these wines renew my faith, they also sparked my passion. I can’t wait to get back to Montalcino. Poggio di Sotto is an estate that spares no expense (all the wines are now organic, and the estate has old vines up to 45 years old and is home to 120 biotypes of Sangiovese), so it would be rather tragic if the wines weren’t so good. However, these are better than good. I think they are a new benchmark for the region.”
It’s kind of pointless to rate a wine of this caliber, so don’t get carried away with the reviews below. Buy in blind faith, and it will hit perfection for you, too. If you open one this year, DECANT for at least a day. Or keep some to ring in the New Year in 2050 and thank your 2025 self for the patience and restraint.
Buy, buy, BUY. Can’t believe we got THIS PARCEL TO SHARE ONCE AGAIN!!!
99 Points – The Drinks Business “Ethereal and utterly beguiling, this has me in raptures just as the 2019 did almost a year ago. A wine that is highly expressive aromatically, yet which is constantly evolving and revealing more of its charms as it inhales, breathes and opens. You’re drawn back to it time and again and each time it gives a little more. There are subtle warm spice notes, an elegant and delicate florality, there’s a hint of iodine and marine salinity – half oyster shall, half nori – and there’s a beautiful assortment of red berries and a little cherry too. Above all one has an almost physical sensation of the gentle warmth of the summer sunshine – like walking on the edge of the shore at the point where the cooling breeze off the sea intermingles with the heat reflecting off the sand. This has a most beautiful shape and form in the mouth too, so sleek, so lithe, so gently caressing and yet the beady tannins are a constant presence – here like little glass rollers on which the purity of the fruit is gently conveyed. Utterly divine.”
98 Points – Wine Enthusiast “The thing that makes Poggio di Sotto stand out from the pack is its substance. Brunello is always a wine with weight and heft, but this one has a density that feels all encompassing- like entering an entirely new universe.”
97+ Points – Wine Advocate “Very much still a baby at the time of my tasting, the Poggio di Sotto 2020 Brunello di Montalcino shares many similarities with the epic 2016 vintage in terms of its pretty perfumes and polished length. This bottle ultimately offers a fresh and charming interpretation of Sangiovese. This is a delicate wine with floral aromas, wild rose, crushed stone and white cherry. Aged in large Slavonian oak casks, it requires more time to flesh out. Harvest started the last week of August and finished the first week of October, which represents a conscious decision to start picking earlier than most. The vineyards are planted on schistic galestro soils, and that territorial imprint comes through strongly in all of these wines. I love that refreshing hint of lemon rind or navel orange at the very end. Drink 2027-2048.”
97 Points – The Wine Independent “Winemaker Leonardo Berti believes the 2020 vintage has the equilibrium to go the long haul, at least as long as the 2019. The bouquet of the 2020 Brunello di Montalcino opens with a core of perfectly ripe and freshly-picked red berries, intertwined with subtle notes of smoke, fresh ground spice, fennel, and wet earth. On the palate, the tannins are luxuriously smooth yet firm, supported by a bright, refreshing acidity that energizes the finish. Youthful and brimming with potential, this wine shows impressive poise and intensity, hinting at an elegant future. Drink 2025-2050.”
