Mission Codename Silicon Dreams

When I was ten, I threw a boomerang for the first time and watched as it looped around and then…came full speed in contact with my forehead on its return. I should have seen it coming. But I was woefully unprepared for the idea that I could throw something, and it would come back to me.

Similarly, last week, when we rolled out this very same wine, we should have seen what was coming. An onslaught of orders that sent our supply straight through the floor, Tower of Terror style. Leaving us with one thought.

We should have got more.

So naturally, we immediately dialed them up and pleaded our case. To our surprise, we got just enough to some more of you VERY, very happy. Move quick because this is like catching lightning twice in a bottle!!

“One of the great Santa Cruz Mountains estates, along with Ridge and Mount Eden” per San Francisco Chronicle, is BACK! After selling out in record time last week, we begged for more - and they came through!!

Think of it as a sequel better than the original motion picture…

On a short list of dream wineries he’s lusted after, Katheryn Kennedy has long occupied a top spot. Today we check that box in brilliant fashion.

And not just ANY Katheryn Kennedy wine. The MOST collectible of them all. The flagship Estate Cab, which fetches a whopping $345 on their site. Our price? Like stumbling upon a lost Aztec treasure, it’s almost unimaginable.

A back vintage from their library no less. With a bit of age, it’s exactly how Noir likes his Kathryn Kennedy; perfectly cellared, peaking in every way. With much, much longer cellaring potential too. Just last year, a CellarTracker member raved for a 1995 vintage: “Spectacularly young for its age. Very dark colored and no signs of bricking. Very clean and precise.”

This sits alongside Ridge Monte Bello or Mount Eden Reserve in its ability to carry the years gracefully. And the price of these wines reach similarly astronomical heights - case in point here.

But not here. 85% OFF a cult rarity, and criminally cheap at $59. Brag about it and folks will think you’re cosplaying Pecos Bill, rattlesnake lassos and all.

These wines rarely make it into the hands of critics, even. Antonio Galloni puts it best on Vinous: “The Kathryn Kennedy wines stand out for their unadorned beauty and Old World classicism. Every time I see them, I wonder why so much time has passed in between tastings.”

It’s mostly because of the TINY production. Wine Advocate has the history, “Established in 1973, Kathryn Kennedy produced Cabernet Sauvignon from a small, seven-acre estate vineyard in the eastern hills of Saratoga. After her passing in 2009, inheritance disagreements in the face of ever-increasing real estate values in Silicon Valley led to the vast majority of her estate vineyard being sold in 2014, leaving only a single acre still in production…” which is why they are “thrilled to be able to taste cuvees with a few years of bottle age, all of which had aged gracefully. These wines are beautifully made and show the fresher, more focused, and acid-driven style that’s common with the Bordeaux varieties from this region. The top wines will be very long-lived.”

As this just starts to enter a plateau of maturity, lifting from the glass with bright red cherries, raspberries, wildflowers, and a touch of spearmint. Sweet, perfumed, and totally gracious, this has it all going on, all in an especially silky and nuanced fashion, particularly in its aromatics, although it turns sweeter and more unctuous on the mid-palate, sparing plenty of depth and intensity on the compelling, racy, long finish.

Jeb Dunnuck sums this golden opportunity well, “One of Santa Cruz Mountains’ pioneering grape growers, Kathryn Kennedy planted estate Cabernet Sauvignon in Saratoga in the 1970s and launched her namesake brand in 1979. Among the first women to have a wine label in her name, she also helped shape the creation of the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA in 1981. Since her death in 2009, her son Marty Mathis, the brand’s winemaker since 1981, has continued the KK legacy. Though production has shrunk over the years, these remain beautifully well-made, age-worthy wines.”

This is the definition of a no brainer. With a release price of $345 a bottle, and a few “competitors” for as low as $100, buy without hesitation. And do it with quickness, because the small stash direct from their library will almost certainly sell out.

No scores for this vintage, except for a couple of tasting notes on CellarTracker from back in 2016,

“a nice, well-balanced old-world style wine with each element in its place, should age well”

“Oh damn. That’s good. Soft vanilla, oaky, blackberry, but not sweet or overpowering. Really long finish.”

Likewise, Wine Spectator quotes Kevin Harvey of Rhys on the 2013 harvest: “the quality was extremely high, and the fruit was in perfect shape, requiring minimal sorting, 2013 will compete with 2012 as the best recent vintage in the Santa Cruz Mountains.”

One last morsel to consider - the 2013 Ridge Monte Bello is a 100-pointer. Just sayin’
