Mission Codename MSM300
Do you like CELLAR WORTHY Italian Reds as much as we do?
Here is a wine for you. 48% OFF a wine that is brilliant now, but built to drink over the next decade.
Pier Paolo Grasso flies a little under the radar. Brought into the country as a restaurant exclusive, they don’t seem to have any retail presence. We confess, we had never heard of him. But when our guest at HQ poured us a glass… well, our notes simple read, “SERIOUSLY good Barbaresco!!!”
The wine gives pure Monica Bellucci vibes – dark, striking, exotic, sultry. A nose of crushed roses, violets, cherry, and sweet spice, with a palate that’s lively and multifaceted. Structured but satiny, deep but nimble, and never boring.
Pier Paolo is carrying on his grandfather’s traditions, farming the same land for nearly 150 years (incidentally, around the same time our modern conception of Barolo and Barbaresco began). He produces wines, including this single Cru bottle, using methods that are Old-School in the best way - native yeast fermentation for added complexity and sense of place, extended maceration to soften tannins, large neutral oak aging to let the site speak for itself.
And Tre Stelle is a special site. It’s one of Barbaresco’s most respected Crus, just south of the city itself. As Decanter mentions, “The majority of this sub-region’s best crus are located south of the town of Barbaresco towards the hamlet of Tre Stelle and Treiso. Its slightly cooler microclimate guarantees wines of both body and finesse. Generally speaking, these are the most complete and balanced wines of the four communes.”
Though less famous than some of the top Barolo Crus, it is celebrated for its elegance and finesse. And single Cru bottles of Tre Stelle often top $120 or more!
Less than $50 for a single Cru wine you can comfortably enjoy now and over the next decade?
Time to stock up.
93 Points – Vinous “The 2019 Barbaresco Tre Stelle is gorgeous. Succulent dark cherry, cinnamon, crushed rose petal, mint and blood orange give the 2019 a striking sense of exoticism. Richly layered and expressive, yet light on its feet, the 2019 is an alluring Barbaresco to enjoy over the next decade plus. Drink 2024-2034.”
