- Decanter tasted it in 2025 and called it ”..still lively..tasted 16 years after harvest…Definition, tension and poise define the 2009 vintage“ They also wrote about it in their recently published ‘2026 World Cup Wine’ series this month and calling it ”..an iconic bottle…to splurge on..”
- James Suckling called it ”..gorgeous…”
- Vinous writes ”This ripe and rich but elegant…”
We brought in three consecutive vintages (2009, 2010, 2011) specifically for Marathon. Rare opportunity to build a vertical of one of Spain’s most celebrated and as Decanter just wrote on June 16th “an iconic bottle” of CVNE’s Imperial Gran Reserva. If you are quick to the click..and stay on you may just grab an incredible RARE vertical! Due to its scarcity it is highly collectible and in demand for the collector and connoisseur hive.
Sadly…we were only able to snag a handful of cases for this wine. Hope you get it and the other two! We don’t think it will last more than 30 minutes in the queue.
Old vine parcels in Briones and Villalba provide the fruit for this exceptional blend of Tempranillo with 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo. This is a wine to drink now or, better still, cellar for a decade or more: sweet oak, black fruits, Asian spices and remarkable focus and freshness. Great value, too.
40% OFF and a chance for a rare collectible library vintage…no thinking needed.
94 Points - Vinous - ”Deep, bright ruby. Highly complex, expansive scents of ripe dark berries, cherry pie, mocha, pipe tobacco and vanilla, with a smoky overtone. Sweet, deep blackberry and floral pastille flavors are complicated by notes of spicecake and bitter chocolate, showing unlikely vivacity on the back half. This ripe and rich but elegant Rioja combines finishes supple, smoky and very long, with velvety tannins making a late appearance to add grip. Drink 2019-2027.”
94 Points - James Suckling - ”This is very ripe with dried fruits and dried flowers. Exuberant aromas. Full body, round and silky, chewy tannins. Bright and exciting. Wonderful fruit. Shows tension and beauty. Needs time to soften and little. So gorgeous. Decant two hours in advance.”
94 Points - Decanter - ”Definition, tension and poise define the 2009 vintage of Imperial tasted 16 years after harvest. The tannins retained a finely-etched liveliness, with a refreshing acid backbone carrying the wine with ease as the tertiary elements begin to gain protagonism. Inviting, and stimulating, tension between elegance and muscle; crunchy fruit and creeping savouriness; briny depth and fragrant nuances. Drink 2025-2035.
93 Points - Wine Advocate - ”The 2009 Imperial Gran Reserva, the textbook blend of Tempranillo with 15% Graciano and Mazuelo, is fermented in oak vats with malo in barrels (part did it in cement) where it matured for two years and the bottles rested in their caves for no less than three years before being released. In this ripe and approachable vintage the wine is soft and round, showing the classical aromas inherited for the American oak along with very balsamic notes of incense, cigar ash, old furniture and good, ripe black fruit in the background. The palate shows more abundant tannins, slightly grainy in nature and an ending that is quite dry. I would wait on this one, but it should develop nicely in bottle. Drink 2016-2027.”
93 Points - Wine Spectator - ”Plum and currant flavors mingle with notes of espresso, tobacco, dried herb and spice in this solid red. Firm tannins and orange peel acidity give this structure and balance. Lovely fruit and floral accents linger.”
