NINETY-EIGHT POINTS. NINETY-EIGHT POINTS AGAIN. And then 97. And 97. And 96, 96, 96…

We ran out of room to post every score. That is not a sentence we get to type very often!!! First-Growth Neighbor…Not First-Growth Price

YOUR PRICE TODAY: $79. That is $41 OFF a wine that Antonio Galloni from Vinous stopped and described in exactly one word: “magnificent.” His word. Not ours.

- Jeb Dunnuck wrote ”concentrated yet utterly classic, focused, elegant style of the vintage and has so much to love.”

- Owen Bargreen writes -”I adore the 2020 Chateau Pape Clement Rouge which is extremely powerful yet dazzles with its underlying tension.”

Minor history lesson that no body asks for but REALLY NEEDS… Go back to Bordeaux 1252. The man who farmed this land became Pope Clement V in 1305. The vineyard was named after him in his honor. The gravel it sits on was deposited by the Garonne River roughly 1.5 million years ago. Bernard Magrez took over in 1985, brought in the late Legend Michel Rolland, and the rest stacks up to the very best! BTW, its neighborhood?? FIRST GROWTH… Château Haut-Brion.

- Jeff Leve of the Wine Cellar Insider called it “the finest vintage of Pape Clement in years.” ..NOTE..Not one of the finest. THE Finest

The sheer quality of the terroir is what you would expect being in the same neighborhood with a First Growth. Plus the relentless investment in quality over the years have brought this Pape Clément very close to the famous First Growth neighborhood it keeps. Deeply wound dark fruit and cold river stone on the nose, brooding and patient and way older than you. On the palate, tightly coiled tannins with serious grip and a freight-train core of fruit underneath. The finish keeps going. You will set your glass down and stare at it for a second. We did.

Just the high scores alone make this wine a screamin’ steal at $79. While SRP is at $120, this wine as James Suckling puts it…“This is for the cellar.” Who cares about the increase in value this wine will get, be selfish and keep this one for yourself! We did!! 😊 Now for the long list of scores…. see below

98 Points - James Suckling - ”Lots of blackberry, iodine and crushed stone here. Some black pepper and graphite, too. Full body and medium, fine tannins that have a powdery texture and open in the mouth. So much going on. Iodine and iron undertones with some raw mushroom bring you back for more. Muscular. This is for the cellar.”

98 Points - Vinous - ”The 2020 Pape Clément is outrageously beautiful. Dark, virile and imposing, the 2020 is a rare vintage of Pape Clément that is vertical and statuesque in feel. Dark fruit, chocolate, new leather, licorice and cloves infuse the palate with tremendous depth. In a word: magnificent. Drink 2030-2050.”

97 Points - Jeb Dunnuck - ”I loved the 2020 Château Pape Clément, and this beauty is up there with the top wines in Pessac. Checking in as equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, aged 18 months in 90% barrels and 10% in foudre, it offers a deep purple hue to go with a powerful, concentrated profile displaying both red and black fruits, lots of spicy, chocolate, flowery incense nuances, full-bodied richness, and an almost salty, bloody character on the finish. This beauty shows the concentrated yet utterly classic, focused, elegant style of the vintage and has so much to love. It’s going to be even better with 4-6 years of bottle age and will see its 30th birthday in fine form. Drink 2027-2057.”

97 Points - The Wine Cellar Insider - ”With a deep hue that is close to opaque, the wine exudes smoke, roasted espresso, cigar wrappers, blackberries, black cherries, licorice and chocolate. There is fabulous depth, purity, length and complexity here. The richly-textured finish is fleshy, powerful, intense and polished, with an endnote that keeps on going long after the wine has left the glass. This is the finest vintage of Pape Clement in years. Drink from 2026-2055.”

96 Points - Raffaele Veccione - ”Shining on the nose giving immediate pleasure with its primary ‘core’ which is rich with wild strawberries, grape must, lemon rind, cut cedar, mandarin blossom and guaranà. Full bodied, soft tannins and an honest, genuine finish of remarkable beauty. Spicy and dark, it is a concentrated wine which has been made with modern vision. Better from 2026.”

96 Points - Owen Bargreen - ”I adore the 2020 Chateau Pape Clement Rouge which is extremely powerful yet dazzles with its underlying tension. A blend of equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, on the palate this classy wine reveals heady pencil lead ,kirsch cordial and espresso grounds that combine with the seamless texture. Very deep and concentrated, enjoys this beauty in a year or so. Drink 2024-2050.”

96 Points – Andreas Larsson “Pure and aromatic nose with bay leaf, sage blending red and dark fruit. The palate shows its usual concentration and depth with fine layers, refined tannin, a good dose of freshness underneath and a brilliantly long finish.”
