Mission Codename MSM820
“Run by the Jeaune Family, with consulting advice from Philippe Cambie, the wines of Grand Tinel always lead with fruit and possess beautiful and classic Southern Rhône characters.” – Wine Advocate
Unfortunately, this was the one before the last vintage for Cambie, a big loss in the world of wine. A moving eulogy is here.
Alas, life goes on, and the genius behind this micro-production luxury cuvée delivers BIG TIME. That, and then some! Leave it to us to take the $110 and slash it down by half to $55.
Cambie’s track record includes Clos Saint Jean in the South of France to Jamet in the North to his California collaboration with Manfred Krankl of Sine Qua Non. From 1998, up until his untimely passing last year, he truly was one of the top consultants in the world, period.
Under the cork, you’ll find black, purple, and blue liquid that oozes out of the bottle like jet fuel. The nose could easily be worn as a perfume, with heady aromas of macerated clove-studded cherries, bright kirsch notes, a touch of molasses and balsamic, and earthy minerals. One sip and you know you made a good choice with spicy, rich black and red fruits, red licorice, sweet raspberry, and freshly cracked Tellicherry and even Sichuan peppercorns. The long, long finish leaves you yearning for the next sip, as the sweet tannins resonate seemingly in an endless loop, where few Grenaches have ever gone before. Enjoy it on its own with cigars or over a lavish platter of well-aged cheeses and luxurious charcuterie.
We have the US Exclusive on this 1-barrel flagship – a few cases while they last.
94 Points – Wine Advocate “Always substantially more exciting than the regular bottling, the 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Alexis Establet seamlessly blends notions of ripe cherries, apricot-like stone fruit and resinous, piney herbal accents. It’s full-bodied and intense but bright and vivacious, with the supple tannins slightly accentuated by the acidity. This is an excellent effort, with ample length and what should prove to be a long drinking window. Drink 2021-2041.”
94 Points – Jeb Dunnuck “The 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Alexis Establet (100% Grenache) sports a ruby/plum hue to go with a charming, already complex nose of spiced red and black fruits, Asian spice, and Provençal garrigue. It shows the forward, nuanced, already complex style of the vintage, has beautiful tannins, and a great finish. Drink this complex, elegant beauty over the coming 10-15 years. Drink 2022-2037.”
94 Points – James Suckling “Stacks of spicy and Mediterranean herb aromas, plus a hint of summer flowers. Rich, muscular and well-structured, this Chateauneuf is not for the faint-hearted but the ripe plum fruit and full, gentle tannins are matched with enough energy to carry this rather briskly over the palate to the long stony and spicy finish. A pure grenache. Drink or hold.”
